Stop studying “singing!” It’s making you worse!

You may be thinking: “What is this strange Sophie person talking about?”

Let me explain…

The #1 mistake most singers make is that they don’t treat their body like it’s an acoustic instrument

For an acoustic guitar to have it’s beautiful hollow sound, it needs space to resonate

Imagine playing an acoustic guitar but you have a sweatshirt stuffed into the tone hole

Wouldn’t sound too good, right?

Well this is why so many singers don’t sing with a big, beautiful sound

Their body is not open, like a big cathedral

It’s more closed off and constrained

And the reason is, they don’t follow the principles that allow acoustic instruments to thrive

They’re often in “singing technique land”, relying on inefficient methods such as:

-Style specific singing techniques

-Only following vocal methods

-Overcomplicated online warmups and exercises

-Breathing advice that doesn’t make anatomical sense

-Over practicing

-Outrageously long warmups

There’s a common myth that different singing styles and genres require different techniques

However, this is not the case for instrumentalists

Good guitar technique is good guitar technique (whether we’re playing rock or flamenco)

Good trumpet technique is good trumpet technique (whether we’re playing jazz or classical)

So why should singing be any different?

Whether we want to sound like a pop star or classical opera singer, we need to focus on the same singing basics

However it’s easy for us to forget the principles that matter since our instrument is always attached to us

And we also use our instrument for basic communication, like talking or snoring (lol)

So it’s easy to get off track…

However, my goal is to get you back on track
