An Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion (ACDF) is a type of surgery that is performed to address issues with the cervical spine, which is the portion of the spine in the neck. This procedure is commonly used to treat conditions that cause compression of the spinal cord or nerve roots, such as:

• Herniated Discs: When the cushioning discs between the vertebrae in the neck protrude out of place and press on the spinal cord or nerves.
• Degenerative Disc Disease: Age-related wear and tear of the discs that can lead to pain, weakness, or numbness.
• Spinal Stenosis: Narrowing of the spinal canal that can compress the spinal cord or nerves.
• Cervical Spondylosis: Arthritis in the neck that can lead to bone spurs and disc degeneration, causing pressure on the spinal cord or nerves.

What an ACDF surgery usually entails can be broken down into 4 parts:

1. Incision: The surgeon makes an incision in the front of the neck, typically along one of the natural skin folds to minimize visible scarring.
2. Disc Removal: The surgeon carefully moves aside muscles, trachea, and esophagus to access the cervical spine. The damaged disc is then removed, along with any bone spurs or other structures compressing the nerves or spinal cord.
3. Fusion: After the disc is removed, a bone graft (or sometimes a synthetic cage filled with bone graft material) is placed in the space between the two vertebrae. This graft helps to maintain the normal spacing and alignment of the spine.
4. Stabilization: A metal plate and screws are often used to hold the vertebrae together, ensuring that they stay properly aligned while the bone graft fuses with the vertebrae over time.
