Body | "I will not let one hot alien distract me from my plan." Natalie's voice floated around the corner, freezing me in place. Even from where I stood, the pheromones in her scent drew me to her. "So you thought he was hot, huh?" I didn't recognize the second speaker—maybe another bride? "Don't get too excited," Natalie said. "My goal is to get kicked out of the games, not flirt with some gorgeous blue guy." She paused, and then her voice turned husky as she added, "But yeah, Cav is definitely... interesting." Hearing my name on her lips sent hot shivers smoldering through me, igniting every nerve ending. "Tell me what you like about him." The other bride seemed determined to draw her out. "It doesn't matter.” Natalie's voice wavered before hardening again. “I’m playing this game to lose." I was so intent on hearing what she'd say next I missed the moment Natalie began walking again. She rounded the corner and stumbled to a stop barely a hairsbreadth away from slamming into my chest—or rather, into my upper abdomen. She was that tiny. And it brought out every protective instinct I had. I grabbed her shoulders as she tilted her head back and gazed into my face. Her eyes met mine, wide and surprised, pupils dilating as they grazed over my features. "Holy moly," she breathed, "you're huge. And so... um… blue." Her hand was halfway toward my chest before she realized it and jerked her wayward fingers away. But not before the electric spark of her almost-touch sent jolts of desire coursing through me. The sound of her heartbeat speeding up echoed through the corridor, and her throat moved as she swallowed hard. I wanted to grasp her hand, press those digits against my bare flesh—and the moment trembled, teetering on a knife's edge. Unable to resist any longer, I pulled the human woman up against me and claimed her mouth with my own. Her lips against mine felt as soft as they looked, yielding to my demands. At the taste of her, sugary-sweet and slightly minty, I growled deep in my throat, a sound of possession and need. Now she did place her palms against my chest, her fingertips brushing lightly across me, the touch of them cool against my overheated skin. For a heartbeat, everything was perfect as our bodies melded together. Until she pulled back her foot and aimed it at me. I drew back in surprise, blinking—not at her words, but at the sensations coursing through me. I had suspected it before, certainly. But now I tightened my hold on her, because the instant I touched her, I knew. The instinct came from deep within me, etched deep into my DNA. This one is mine. I would destroy any male who tried to take her from me. Unbidden, a growl rumbled in my throat, possessive and primal. She pulled back, and I released her, lowering her until her toes touched the deck before taking my hands from her waist--even though I knew with that same certainty that no matter what she might say aloud, her body strained toward my touch. “Never do that again,” she said with a glare. “I won’t,” I promised. A slow smile curved across my lips. “Not until you beg me to.” “Which will be never.” She tossed her head, her hair swinging around her shoulders. My voice dropped into a lower register, desire rumbling through it. “Oh, really? Because your body is telling me something entirely different.” Natalie’s eyes widened in outrage as her soft pink cheeks flared a burning red. “Oh. You…you…” she spluttered--before finally spinning on her heel and storming back around the corner, her hips swaying with every infuriated step. I stared after her until she disappeared from my sight entirely. You've chosen your bride, a small voice inside me noted, and I knew it was right. I had every intention of taking this bride in particular. Even if she had every intention of playing to lose the Alien Bride Lottery. * * * |
