Portable generators are a great option if you’re budget friendly and pretty mechanically inclined and capable of setting up. Most portable generators are super easy to operate and start nowadays with push button or key starting. Here’s some information that may help you setup your own portable setup that can backup your home during an outage including your AC for literally a fraction of the cost. Generac Standby systems can cost up to $20,000 - $35,000 💰 💰💰💰. Automatic setups that cost this much are great for elderly that aren’t capable of switching a couple breakers, filling up generator with fuel, or hooking up the propane line just like a BBQ grill. For those of you capable, this is in our opinion is the best option and it works the same for running your essentials and have power during an outage. SAVINGS SAVINGS SAVINGS SAVINGS Portable setups can be as low as $1500 including the new portable generator doing it yourself. Lots of you may be able to tackle this on your own and a lot of you will need to hire an electrical contractor to help you get prepared this season. Obviously, the first step is you should always get a County/City electrical permit as they also can help make sure things are done correctly and to NEC (National Electrical Code) regardless if you do it yourself or hire a contractor. Below is a list of materials you’ll need for your home and the size of portable generator we recommend as well as a website for generator interlock kits required for this type of backup power. Below is also a great video of an install but it shows a 30A installation. We recommend a 50A installation which just requires a larger size wire and 50A rated inlet box. There’s lots of information online to get your home setup correctly if you’re on a budget and looking for a cost effective backup power and still be able to run whole home AC. Every situation is different when it comes to installing a portable setup. Some can be more difficult than others due lots of variables like electrical panel locations, type of electrical panel, available space in electrical panel, where and so on.
