Are you an LGBTQ+ U.S. citizen married to a foreign national? Here’s a breakdown of the procedure to bring your spouse to the United States.

1. File Petition for Alien Relative: This petition establishes your marriage and qualifies your spouse for a green card. This step requires that you provide verifiable evidence demonstrating a bonafide relationship.
2. Wait for Approval: Once the petition is approved, the next steps depend on whether your spouse is in the U.S. or abroad:
If in the U.S.: Your spouse can file for Adjustment of Status with USCIS.
If abroad: Your spouse will go through consular processing, where they’ll apply for an immigrant visa at the U.S. embassy or consulate in their home country.
3. Visa Interview: The consulate or USCIS will schedule an interview to confirm the legitimacy of your relationship. Be prepared for a thorough interview about your marriage, daily life, and future plans together.
