On this Day in 1918 a young soldier from southwest Yonkers fell on the field of Battle.

A telegram received a t the home of his aunt, Mrs. Mar y Miller, 110 New Main Street, disclosed the fact that Private Michael Joseph Kelly died of wounds received in action on the anniversary of his 21st birthday. Kelly was born in Ossining. N. Y. Sept. 29, 1897, and later moved to Yonkers with his parents, where he attended St. Joseph's School. He was employed a, a weaver in the Carpet Mills up until the time of his enlistment in March 1916. He was a member of Company E, 107th Infantry Regiment, 27th Division. They sailed for France early in April 1918. He served with Perishing’s army near the Mexican Border during the trouble then , and did considerable guard duty near Yonkers before going overseas. Surviving besides his mother, Mrs., Margaret Kelly, were three sisters, Mrs. Robert Eanes, Loretta and Gertrude Kelly, and one brother. Private Thomas Kelly, who was serving as an ammunitions truck driver.

Private First Class Hayner was laid to rest in Somme American Cemetery. Another son of Yonkers who left to fight for freedom and never returned home. Let Us Always Remember his Sacrifice to All of us. Let US Never Forget Private First-Class Michael J Kelly.
