Body | The little girl I met by chance turned out to be my ex-husband's daughter, and there was another layer of identity behind the girl.
I noticed a little girl alone, so I stepped forward to care about her.
"What about your mother?" I asked her
Her face darkened with sadness. "She probably doesn't know she has a child, I don't even know her."
Tears rolled down my cheeks. "I 'm really sorry for reminding you of your past." I apologized.
"It's alright, I don't care anyway about her." She retorted and I swallowed hard around the lump of emotion in my throat.
"And you? Do you have a child?" She asked.
I shook my head . "Well, I was pregnant and I lost my child. My husband fixed the blame on me and I had to request for a divorce."
She nodded with a sigh. "That might have been really hard for you. The pain of losing a child must have been tough for you to bear." She said.
"Can you please take me to my dad's house?" She pleaded.
If I had known in advance that sending her home would meet my ex-husband who would break my heart, I would have definitely thought of other ways to prevent everything from happening.

————————
-
Jayda's POV
The new car I just bought was stolen and I have been trying to find it. My friends have also been helping me think of solutions.
As I waved Daniel goodbye, I was left alone on the street. My tears stopped for a second and I noticed a young girl of about six years of age leaning on her school's gate.
I wanted to leave but she was looking dejected and lonely. I didn't want to leave without knowing what was wrong with her. Walking towards her, I noticed tears in her eyes and I could definitely relate, I had just lost my car and I wanted to cry.
"Hey," I called out and she looked at me. After staring at me for a few seconds, she took her eyes off me and stared at the floor. "I'm not a kidnapper and it's alright to chat with me." I assured her with a bright smile .
"Go away from me." She murmured and I sat down near her.
"Believe me, I'm not a kidnapper. What's wrong?"
She scanned through my face again before answering. "My dad didn't come to pick me up from school and the school bus left without me because I was grounded at school."
I felt bad for her, why was she having an irresponsible dad that couldn't even come to her school to pick her up? "I'm really sorry about that. Maybe he's a little bit busy at work."
She scoffed. "He's not busy."
How was she sure? Maybe her father was probably a drunkard or a jobless man. "What's your name, sweetheart?" I inquired.
"My name's Kelly Jefferson." She answered, giving me a sweet smile.
Why was the surname familiar? It was exactly my ex-husband's surname even though I knew people also used that name. I brushed off the thought that she was Henry's daughter. Kelly's absolutely one of the best names I've ever heard.
"You look really beautiful."
"Thanks, what about your mother?" I asked her
Her face darkened with sadness. "She probably doesn't know she has a child, I don't even know her."
Tears rolled down my cheeks. Who wouldn't want to have a beautiful daughter? Why would her mom abandon her? That was really bad and I felt really sorry for her. Growing up without a motherly love was one of the worst experiences ever for a small child. "I 'm really sorry for reminding you of your past." I apologized.
"It's alright, I don't care anyway about her." She retorted and I swallowed hard around the lump of emotion in my throat.
"I totally understand."
"And you? Do you have a child?"
I shook my head . "Well, I was pregnant and I lost my child. My husband fixed the blame on me and I had to request for a divorce."
She nodded with a sigh. "That might have been really hard for you. The pain of losing a child must have been tough for you to bear." She said.
"I know, right."
"Can you please take me to my dad's house?" She pleaded.
I shrugged . "My car got stolen today, I would have driven you to your dad's house and ....."
She interrupted and pointed to a bus heading towards our direction. "I'm so lucky, that's the school bus." She announced excitedly.
"That's awesome."
When the bus stopped in front of us, she looked at me with a smile and hoped in. After a few seconds, she came down from the bus and looked at me. "Can I kindly know your name?" She asked and softened her eyes.
There was no way I could refuse her. "I'm Jayda." I murmured.
"We'll definitely meet again." She replied and climbed the school bus.
Henry's POV
I was really excited to see my daughter pull me in for a hug. Even though I raised her alone, she was the best thing that had ever happened to my life.
"Daddy, why didn't you come to pick me up from school?" She asked.
I shrugged. "Things got bad today at the site, I had to hand two criminals to the cops."
"Hope you aren't injured?" She inquired.
I shook my head with a broad smile. "I'm not injured." I answered and slumped down on the sofa switching on the TV.
"Daddy, I made a new friend sofa ." She suddenly announced joyfully as she sat down on the sofa near me.
"A new friend?" I inquired and she nodded. When did Kelly start making new friends? My friend's son was the only friend that Kelly had because she hated getting close to people.
"When will I get to meet this new friend?' I asked her.
"I don't know but she said her name's Jayda."
My heart skipped a beat. Why did images of my ex-wife flash into my memory as soon as he called that name. "Jayda , did she tell you her surname?" I asked immediately.
She shook her head and walked towards the dining table. "Kelly, I told you not to talk to strangers."
"She's different. Her car got stolen and she was also sad."
I heaved a sigh of relief. The Jayda I knew would never buy a car because she didn't even know how to drive. She hated anything that had to do with plying on the road. "Alright, I can't wait to meet this new friend of yours."
"She's really entertaining and nice, I wish you've seen her before. You'll fall in love with her at first sight, she's beautiful and intelligent." She replied with a bright smile.

-
Jayda's POV
Last night at the bar, while chatting with a stranger about my current situation, I mentioned that my new car had been stolen. A woman gave me a number and said she was a local gang boss. If I contact him, he can help me solve the problem.
My morning was really frustrating, I had tried several ways to make my hair curly but it wasn't working. I grumbled and wore a short blue gown after taking a quick bath.
I didn't want to be late, I wanted to find the man who would help me find my car. It was a crazy idea to look for a car that even the police couldn't help me find. I was also scared of meeting a Mafia Boss for the first time because I have read and heard many stories about their cruelty.
Mostly romance stories though but also dangerous erotic stories about Mafia leaders. After coming out of my room, I went straight to the fridge and pulled out a glass of milk and a packet of cornflakes.
It was the only breakfast meal that I could think of. I was trying to meet up with the time so I would be able to meet the mafia leader.
After taking the last spoon of cornflakes, I dumped the plate in the sink and walked out of the kitchen with a smile on my face.
Mission Accomplished!
The weather was a little bit dull but I didn't want to waste any more time. My mom could come anytime and if she didn't see a car in my compound, she'll definitely make my life more miserable than it already is.
"Hey, where are you heading? I could give you a ride." Fred, my next door neighbor suggested but I wasn't ready to follow him.
"Don't worry, I could use a bus or a taxi." I assured him with a smile.
"You shouldn't decline my offer." He murmured and I stopped for a second and thought about his offer again. He was definitely right, he could actually save me the stress of standing under the sun to wait for a bus.
I pretended to be discouraged a bit and later gave him a smile. "Alright, I'm heading to Bailey's street, 107 avenue. I don't really know the house but I guess I'll figure it out when we get there." I told him as soon as I entered his car.
The car's engine revved and he drove off. He was my new neighbor but he was trying to get so close to me, I didn't want to become attached to him because of the way I was betrayed by my ex-husband.
I didn't want to repeat the same mistake that got me divorced. He wanted a child and I lost my child, he made my life miserable and I had to divorce him.
He stayed in Texas while I relocated to New York and became a CEO of a publishing company. Our romance wasn't that deep, I would say it was based on desires. He wanted a child and I wanted happiness, I actually wanted real love and affection.
He made me feel like trash even when I knew I was something, I didn't want to go through that stress and path again with a man. No, I couldn't even bring myself to love any man. I should have listened to Daniel when he warned me about Henry.
My family also warned me about him but I was foolishly blinded by love that I didn't even know I was married to myself. " I was calling your name and you didn't even answer." Fred's loud voice jerked me back to reality.
"Believe me when I say I didn't know you were calling me," I paused and pushed a strand of my hair behind my ear. "I'm sorry." I apologized sincerely.
"You're thinking again, right?" He inquired, curiosity and concern lacing his voice.
I nodded. "There's a lot of things to think about, the people we're supposed to trust end up betraying us."
"You were married before?" He asked me
I narrowed my eyes at him, surprised by how he knew. "Yeah, how did you know?"
"I saw the picture of a young and handsome man in your parlour and reckoned he was your husband."
"My parlour?"
Was he playing tricks here? How did he get into my parlor?
He chuckled softly. "You came back home at night, you were drunk and I couldn't just leave you outside your door. I had to help you and take you inside."
My eyes widened in shock and amusement. "Wait, I actually did remember seeing myself on my bed the next day, I was even surprised on how I got there."
He smiled charmingly and slowed down for pedestrians to cross to the other side of the road. He continued driving when they'd all passed. "I'm a caring man." He praised himself with a grin.
"Maybe you are," I muttered, humor in my voice. "And you? You aren't married, why?"
He still focused on driving but managed to steal a few glances at me. "No, I don't think I'm ready for relationships, it comes with a lot of problems and stress. I'm not ready to be a father or a boyfriend"
His point was valid but I figured out that he probably had a secret and was scared of telling me. "Are you alright?" I asked as soon as I noticed his sad expression.
"My aunt died as a result of marriage issues, she died because her husband killed her with his insults and annoying behavior. He would beat her at every slight mistake and I wasn't ready to see that, I don't want to be in a relationship," he paused and looked at me. "I just want hook-ups and intimacy." He added quickly with a smirk.
"I'm really sorry for reminding you, I hope you aren't offended."
He shook his head and suddenly pulled to a stop in front of a big house. "So what are you doing in this dangerous street?"
"What do you mean dangerous?" I asked him, my heart beating slowly.
"Just kidding." He answered and I heaved a sigh of relief.
For a second, I thought my heart wasn't working again. "I'm here to see the mafia leader."
His brows furrowed. "Henry?"
No, that black man wasn't answering the same name with my ex-husband. Was this a sign from the..... I stopped halfway because I wasn't ready to even get back with him. "Alright, so where's his house?" I asked him.
"You're right in front of his house." He answered and I came down from the car and thanked him for a ride.
I watched him drive up and faced the house. As soon as I knocked on the door, I heard a little noise from inside and the door was slightly pushed open.
A girl walked out of the house and smiled at me. I recognized her to be 'Kelly' who wanted me to be her friend.
-
Jayda's POV
I was surprised to find her standing by the door so I reckoned that she was the daughter of the Mafia leader. "Hey Jayda, what are you doing here? How did you know about my house?" She asked with a smile.
A smile plastered on my face as I contemplated, I didn't want to tell her the truth. I could just lie and get away with it. "Found your address on Google maps." I lied.
She blinked her eyes severally and finally narrowed them on me. "I never knew that it was possible to find my address on Google maps, is that even possible?"
I nodded. Who would believe such a lie? Well, she was a kid, it really didn't matter. "Huh, can I come in?" I inquired.
No, it was rude to ask her.
This is a mistake.
"Huh, I have to ask my nanny first." She murmured.
I was taken aback for a few seconds. "You have a nanny?" I asked her in surprise.
She nodded and gave me a low chuckle. "Yeah, her name's Hannah." She whispered and ran back into the house leaving me in the corridor.
After a few seconds, she came out of the house with a young beautiful lady I presumed to be Hannah. "Good day, ma'am."
I smiled at her. "I'm here to speak to the Mafia leader." I told her.
She raised an eyebrow in surprise. "From where?" She inquired.
Lying was not an option. "I'm Kelly's friend." I answered.
She looked at Kelly before facing me. "You work with my boss?" She asked.
"No, I'm here for business and I'm also the CEO of a publishing company, can I come in please?"
I was starting to get impatient and annoyed by her questions. She was a nanny and not a security officer.
"Do you have an appointment with him?"
No, she wasn't even going to ask that, was she? "I don't....." My voice trailed off.
"Do you......"
I cut in quickly. "Can you just let me into the house? I'm not a stranger." I muttered in a loud voice.
She cleared her throat before replying. "He's not around."
I broke into a cold sweat. Was that all she was going to tell me after she asked multiple questions like I was a criminal? All for the sake of my lost car, I had to answer unnecessary questions.
She somehow read my thoughts and quickly resumed as though on cue, and said. "I'm really sorry." She apologized.
I stared at her, boiling inside, struggling to suppress the growing urge to whack the nanny across her cheeks for keeping me outside for so long. Then, Hannah spoke again. "Alright, come in, since you're Kelly's friend. I'll explain everything to her dad when he comes back."
I heaved a sigh of relief and entered the house. The house was a little bit bigger than my house and also beautiful, it was painted in white and had beautiful designs on the walls and ceiling. Kelly smiled as soon as she saw me and I sat down on the sofa comfortably. "I didn't even know you would come here. I would have asked Hannah to cook for you."
A smile plastered on my face as I looked at the beautiful young girl in front of me. "Thanks dear, I'll be going soon."
She frowned. "You just came, you should wait for my dad. He wants to meet you too." She explained gently.
I also wanted to meet him but I couldn't tell them. Hannah had a sad and annoyed facial expression, I didn't want her to be so uncomfortable with me around. "Alright, I'll just stay for a few minutes," I assured her.
Kelly waved her hands in the air and jumped. "What's that?" I asked her with a smile on my face.
"I do that whenever I'm happy." She told me and I nodded.
"Have you eaten?" I inquired and she kept quiet.
Hannah slanted a look at me. "You're in no position to ask her that question." She murmured.
"No, you're in no position to tell me what to do." I replied.
"You're a stranger." She reminded me and my face grew warm with embarrassment. She was definitely right, I was just a stranger.
"I only took bread and tea, I'm still hungry." Kelly muttered, fear in her soft voice.
I wrapped my hands around her shoulder and placed a peck on her forehead. "Alright, I'll make something for you to eat." I told her.
"I won't let you go into the kitchen to cook for Kelly." Hannah said, her tone left no room for argument.
For a moment, the only thing I could do was to stay silent. I didn't want a situation that would cause any harm to Kelly. "It's alright, I'm just being naughty. It's not yet time for lunch." Kelly explained with a sweet smile.
"Really?" I prodded curiously.
"Yeah, can I show you my dad's picture?" She asked.
I nodded and watched her climb the stairs to bring the pictures. Avoiding Hannah's stare, I brought out my phone to play a game when a call came in.
The caller ID showed that it was an unknown number and I quickly picked up the phone. "Good news," The man gushed without even saying hello.
"Huh, who's this?" I asked, a little bit confused.
"You can't even recognize my voice, I can't believe this." He said.
I heaved a sigh of frustration and suppressed a low chuckle. "Who's this? This is certainly not a prank, is it?"
"You met me at the bar last night." He reminded me and my heart began thumping so hard that I could feel it in my ears.
It was Nick but how did he get my phone number? "How did you get my phone number?" I asked, partly irritated.
"Fate does wonders, doesn't it?" He mocked with a loud chuckle. "We need to meet right now." He finally said after a brief moment of silence.
No, the last person I wanted to see was Nick. I didn't want to see him because I couldn't feel any connection. "I'm really busy right now." I told him.
"It has to do with your car." He informed me and I stood up.
My car? Has he found my car? There was only one way to know about the information he had for me and meeting him was the only option. "Alright, where are you?" I inquired.
"Exquisite Club." He replied and without saying a word to Hannah, I ran out of the house and stopped a bike.
"Take me to the Exquisite Club." I murmured.
After I had settled down comfortably on the bike, I remembered that Kelly wanted to show me pictures of her dad but it was already too late. If I knew her dad was my ex-husband, I should have seen those photos. Instead of leaving feeling like it's too late. |
