Body | BUT HOW IS THE CHICKEN…?

The corporate model is a structure like none other. It is really a well oiled machine set up to make maximum profits with minimal labor. It is the “Rat Race” on steroids. It is a well crafted tapestry of people who have a particular part to play in the everyday operation. Each person has a place to be for a certain amount of time. In the amount of time they are allotted, they have to make enough money to justify their salary. Their salary is determined by how much money you will make the company by doing your job for the day. That is broken down into hours and there you have your wage. The only issue is that your wage isn’t directly proportional to what you produce. If you make about $20 an hour for an 8 hour day, then you make$160 a day before taxes. Best believe the company is making anywhere from 3-10 times as much off of the work you are doing. Now, it isn’t a bad thing that this takes place, we all have to eat. If you are able to make a good living doing what you do, that is great. This isn’t an attack on the corporate model, I do corporate training. This is just a picture to show the people who are ready for change in their lives how to make that change from being a cog in the wheel that makes others wealthy. Most people who work develop a lifestyle based upon their level of income. They purchase a car in their price range. A home and the trapping that go with what their salary dictates. But most of the time they do just a little more than what they make because society gives credit too. So on top of what you make, you can add another $15000 a year to your income. So now you are living better than you probably should and fall into the trap most people do and that is living paycheck to paycheck. You have balanced everything in your life along this tightrope so that your life appears to be one way, while in reality most of it is just a great illusion.

Now there are always exceptions to every rule, so this may not apply to you. But for most people there is a silent competition that takes place and you begin to race against your co-workers, neighbors and even family to see who has the nicest things or who can go the nicest places. So here you are, working hard for your money and living the dream as it were. News of a layoff hits and you find out who is really living a comfortable life. Who is really living in their means and using their money wisely. This shake-up happens a lot in corporate America to capitalize profits for investors and compensation packages for upper level management. Because the truth of the matter is, the humanity has been gone from the formula. Now there are nothing but numbers of which you are one of now. The bottom line is the bottom line. How to now get the same or more work out of less people. How to make the company look better on paper so that our investors will stick around a little longer so that we can continue to remain viable in today’s market. That is it. Nothing more. Nothing less. So everyone in the company that isn’t senior level management is expendable. However, if they don’t produce the right numbers, they can be excused as well.

That is why on the floor where your desk is located and everyone there knows how overworked you already are when the news of a layoff comes that you have a legitimate beef. But the person making the decision doesn’t know you or your work, all they know is the numbers and the numbers have to be right. So the janitor paying for three daughters in college who has worked 20 years with the company who everyone loves, is just a number. Your co-worker who makes everyone’s day brighter because of their personality is just a number. Your direct supervisor who keeps the heat off of people when they are dealing with personal issues because he or she understands is just a number. So upstairs if the numbers don’t add up, then some numbers have to be subtracted so the math looks good to investors. Your life is disrupted because even though you show up day in and day out to do your part, your number gets pulled. Because quiet as kept, you are all equal numbers so long as you are doing what is required. Sometimes you get a slacker in a group who might deserve to be let go, but they are not always the ones to go. It isn’t fair. Don’t they know you have a mortgage and a car note? Don’t they know that you have 5 mouths to feed? Of course, they have the same things going on too. But in order to maintain their lifestyle choices, they have a job to do as well.

So what can you do to avoid this? Nothing, it is coming. They are able to hire kids straight out of college and pay them half of what you are making for the very same job. They have outsourced and cut the budget until they have squeezed a penny and made it produce a dime. They have lobbied the government for ways to cut corners to cut expenses. They have paid the people to be quiet about questionable business practices. They have destroyed lives and communities. They have introduced a new slavery that benefits everyone but only compensates the upper echelon. Kind of like indentured servitude. Then they have the nerve to ask you what you think of the product. How is the chicken? Well, the chickens are raised here in the states then sent to chicken plants in rural areas who don’t complain about the smell or hazards because they need the money to survive since it is the most stable job in town. There they are cleaned and cut before being sent to China to be “Properly Packaged” and sent back here for our consumption. Makes sense to me.
