Body | “My grandmother meant the world to me her death when I was seven was sudden unexpected and tragic.

I had spent a lot of time with Nannie because she was one of my primary caretakers in the first years of my life.

While the family had gathered together to celebrate her life, the children were not permitted to go to the funeral or to the funeral home so for me there had been no closure. I cried a lot. And I was miserable distraught and inconsolable.

The grief over losing my grandmother has never left me even in spite of trauma therapy, but that is a story for another time.

As a child I imagined she was still alive, but somewhere else. And I would fantasize that she was going to come back. Didn’t the Bible say, “He who believes in me she’ll never die?”

Almost inconsolable, I was sent to see a priest about why I was so distressed.

Crying and angry, I explained to him that I was upset because God told a lie. He did his best to explain the passage from scripture, calm me down, and then started asking questions.

“Do you love the church? Maybe someday you’ll become a nun? Would you like to serve God?”

I’m thinking, I don’t want to serve that way. Besides nuns look dangerous and like penguins in their outfits.

“No, I’d like to become a priest.”

He responded with – “You can’t because you’re a girl, and why would you want to become a priest?”

“Because they get to do all the magic” I responded.

Whatever it was that happened on the altar, turning wafers and wine into the body and blood of Christ. I knew that was a magical manifestation, and if I wanted to be in a religious role, I wanted to be the one that the head of the room who did the magic.

I still identify as a Priestess.

The world needs more feminine energy and certainly more magic. My work in the world is about transforming work cultures into places where people can be energized, cared about, and maybe even loved.

In 2023 my colleague Mia Doucet asked to be a contributor to a book she was doing on women who had experienced trauma and had succeeded despite the trauma in their lives. I agreed. When she called me to interview me, she asked me to talk to her about the first thing that came to my mind, and that is the story that she documented in her beautiful book STRONG, Successful women share stories of childhood trauma and triumph.

https://www.amazon.com/STRONG-Successful-Stories-Childhood-illustrated/dp/B0CHLHPP47/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&dib_tag=se&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.likZB8c0yWQ81CGDn6e0qikNMEUtsJ-2pRBy_DD8WkbfCUyLmkQ_kERJuNApo5prxiXJq9TPv_3UhqRxa03fzx2qoSWR1DDDfLDvKcmGJxQpsmdi4fC-FL4vl5MeYXpYZM2F5JddJ64eaFIhf4VEGNkpcMy0oHOv3H_gU2SLE8I.9fQ1aPQ6i27dPVtTk057e46g2X-wFVwi3byEa9pjJ1U&qid=1719870539&sr=8-1

She created this fabulous illustration to go along with the edited version of what I shared. |
