All have a violent past and present day reports of hauntings. All are unique in their own way. The state of West Virginia has an abandoned prison of its own, known to many simply as &quot;Moundsville&quot;. <br /> <br /> And while there may reside the same types of paranormal activity that you would find in any other location, the West Virginia State Penitentiary is known for the possibility of something else. Something terrifying to think about.<br /> <br /> The West Virginia State Penitentiary was built in 1876. A total of 94 men were executed, first by hanging, then later the electric chair. There were 36 known homicides. On November 7, 1979 an escape of 15 inmates took place. On New Years&#039; Day of 1986, a deadly riot erupted. In all, 998 inmates died within these walls.<br /> <br /> As conditions steadily deteriorated over the decades, and in 1986 the West Virginia Supreme Court ruled the 5&#039; x 7&#039; inmate cells were cruel and unusual punishment. West Virginia State Penitentiary officially closed in 1995.<br /> <br /> As it relates to paranormal activity, West Virginia State Penitentiary is known for the unusual games that seem to be played within these walls. Imagine walking alone down a dark corridor (which by the way, isn&#039;t highly recommended), only to hear footsteps behind you. You stop to listen and hear nothing. You continue walking again, and the footsteps behind you continue. There&#039;s no one there. Or is there?<br /> <br /> There&#039;s also the famous &quot;sugar shack&quot; which is known for a very sordid history. Investigators who find themselves standing against the wall may discover they are standing in the middle of the room minutes later with no recollection of moving. There&#039;s also the shadows you may accidentally bump into, only to discover there&#039;s no one there. <br /> <br /> Or a door that opens and closes by itself from behind a locked gate. Or catching glimpses of a figure following you from North Hall up to the psychiatric area. Is this all explainable? it just random paranormal activity that occurs? Or is there a well designed game being played with you as the target?
