Body | Shabbat Shalom, everyone!

“Shabbat Shalom” is Hebrew for “Sabbath Peace.”

However, this Hebrew word for "peace" has a deeper layer of meaning ~ "wholeness" as in "wholeness of soul."

So, as the Jewish people wish each other "Sabbath Peace" on this day, they are actually blessing one another ~

"May you have the wholeness of soul that comes from Sabbath rest."

This is a rest like no other ~ rest in the very presence of God.

“I will satisfy the weary soul, and every languishing soul I will replenish.” (Jeremiah 31:25)

Egypt told the Jewish people the exact opposite ~ They deserved no rest at all, because they were no more than slaves. As slaves, they would have worked 7 days a week, sun-up to sun-down. They were no more valuable than the work they performed.

And all the gods and goddesses of ancient times were taskmasters as well, with no rest or wholeness found in following them.

God's Sabbath command freed His people from this false narrative ~ this idea that the human soul is of no value.

Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel, one of the leading Jewish theologians of the 20th century, said….

“The Sabbath is the presence of God in the world, open to the soul of man.”

No wonder they refer to the Sabbath as “Queen Sabbath” and eagerly await the Sabbath day all week.

And then Jesus, their Messiah, invited them.....

"Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
For My yoke is easy and My burden is light" (Matt 11:28-30).

How their hearts must have leapt within them!

Jesus talked about rest the same way their God did.

He is a God who longs to delight His people with His goodness, and show us the truth of who we are.

Sabbath rest is made for man ~ sacred time that sets us free,
because it re-orients us toward God ~ away from this world, with its harsh messages, messages of how we need to look and perform....messages that fragment the soul.

In His Presence we become more whole.

His Presence renews our souls.

He takes our fragmented hearts

And breathes new life

And wholeness

And vision into us.

Indeed, Shabbat Shalom! |
