Body | Death'd be the best way out for her. Maybe her life would be better, if there even were next lives...
***
Jocelyn jolts awake to a loud thud beside her. Blinking, struggling to focus, she barely makes out the tall figure with the broad, muscular build standing nearby.

She's frozen, every bone in her body aching, throat parched, unable to make a sound.

"Dragonfly," her Teacher sighs, scooping her up, "what am I gonna do with you?"

"She's finally down!" One of the Firstborn grinds out through clenched teeth, tightening the silver chain around Astrea's neck, forcing her gaze upward as his partner slaps silver cuffs on her wrists behind her back. No more fighting from her now.

"How many'd she kill this time?" someone asks.

"Six," Isaac, a werewolf nursing his wounds, spits blood on the grass. Astrea's lips curl into a wicked smile. If she had more juice in her, he'd be number seven.

Now that it's all over, she doesn't have to hold back. Might as well enjoy her last moments.

"I told y'all to look the other way, pretend you didn't see me!" Her smirk grates on the warriors who finally subdued her, thanks to her exhaustion and one stupid slip-up.

One of them, a big bear shifter, backhands her, sending her sprawling.

He laughs, but the others stay silent, watching her suffering in quiet disgust.

Jocelyn knows why it ain't funny to them. Among the Firstborn, she's the golden girl, the one who was successful on her every mission, Teacher's pet.

And if this is her end, what happens to them?

They might be killers, but they've got rules to follow. That's what keeps their world from falling apart. And now Jocelyn's shattered it all.

"What, you think you'll have a happy ending unlike me?" Her bitter laugh echoes. "Not likely!"

The bear hits her again, harder this time, and she reels, taste of blood on her tongue.

"Is this it?" she taunts, hoping to push them to finish her off. That'd be the best way out for her.

After all, she's a traitor. And Firstborns don't forgive traitors.

A foot connects with her face, then her stomach, pounding the life out of her. But not hard enough to finish the job, much to her dismay.

"Grow some guts!" Jocelyn snarls, feeling her wolf, Kelly, getting riled up. The idiot bear's almost done what she wanted, but at the last moment, one of the others steps in.

"Enough," he says, and Jocelyn hopes they'll finally end it, but instead, she feels a silver needle prick her skin. Her eyes widen. They've got no reason to poison her. Firstborns don't play that way. Unless...

"You know we can't touch her!" one of the women nearby protests. Not really.
"He said to punish her!" Isaac insists, but all he gets is a snort in response.

"He also said to bring her back alive," the same woman says, offering a wry smile. "But if you wanna test the Teacher, be my guest."

Jocelyn's trained to resist all poisons, including aconite, but whatever's in her bloodstream now is new.

But that's not what worries her most.

She tries to focus on one of her captors. They can't be serious. She has to die today. Better to die than go back.

Her vision blurs, and the last thing she sees is how close she is to the eastern border.

The desert's right there, tantalizingly close yet agonizingly out of reach.

Just one more mile, and she could slip into rogue territory. Maybe trick them into fighting the Firstborns while she escapes in the chaos.

It's a crappy plan. She knows her odds are slim. And now poison's making her body go limp, limb by limb. It's the end.

She's hoisted like a sack of potatoes as one of her former comrades hauls her away, and when she tries to lift her head, something changes in the distance.

Her lips part as she sees the most magnificent creature she's ever laid eyes on. Pitch black, each step darkening the sand beneath its feet. Though her vision's blurry, she swears their gaze locks, a familiar sensation prickling her heart.

But then she's pulled back into suffocating darkness, struggling to stay conscious.

Waking up in a car trunk, chained in silver with poison still coursing through her, Astrea's senses pinpoint where she's been taken.

The car's still, but she feels the slow sway of movement. Unfortunately, it's not her first time.

They're on a ferry, meaning what she dreads most is about to happen. The Firstborns are taking her back to their island.

She wants to scream. She loathes this place more than anything. Hopes never to see it again. And she knows nothing good awaits there. Not anymore.

Once they reach land, warriors drag her paralyzed body through the mud for all to see, a lesson for everyone.

She's a spectacle.

This is what happens to traitors. No matter who they are.

They lead her to the silver pit, a punishment in itself. Only traitors go there. And now, Jocelyn's one of them.

Someone grabs her hair, forcing her head up to put another silver collar on her neck. Then she's shoved to the ground, a leash added, the most humiliating punishment for a werewolf. Kelly growls inside her, itching to claw it off. But they're too weak now.
"Remember this day!" Amanda, someone she trained alongside for years, warned, avoiding eye contact. "No one's safe! There are no favorites! If you go against the Master and break our oath, this is what awaits you!"

Jocelyn quickly scanned the gathered crowd. The elite warriors, the Firstborn, had halted their exercises and battles to witness her downfall. It might have seemed odd, but she still smirked. She had no regrets.

With a swift turn, he kicked her chest, sending her tumbling down, down, down until she hit the stone floor, bones cracking and pain searing through her.

The air at the bottom was too heavy for her - silver-lined walls in a death cell.

Curling up on the floor, she tried to hug her knees, then realized it was a bad idea. Her body ached from the merciless beating.

Healing would take time here, amidst the silver and the lingering poison. She stretched, assuming the most anatomically correct position to help her bones knit faster.

Closing her eyes, she recalled why she was here. The Firstborn's army had few rules, but one was paramount: Always obey the Teacher.

For years, she had followed that rule. So why couldn't she now?

She knew why all too well. Her last mission had been different - she had lived among her targets for weeks. Initially not tasked with killing, she grew to like them. They were kind, noble, and full of life - something she'd missed living on the isolated island.

When the order came to kill them all, she faced a choice: follow her Teacher's orders or give those people a chance. She hoped they made good use of that chance, because now she was paying the price. |
