I found her in the first place I looked.

Well, I found her guards anyway, shivering several paces from the willow tree by the pond and looking to a spot near the ground still hidden from me.

I dismissed them with a gesture. They each shot me a grateful look before hurrying to the relative warmth of the castle.

The fact that she was dramatic enough to force them to freeze their butts off in the snow reminded me just how thoughtless she could be. Just how selfish she could be.

My blood boiled.

Shaking my head, I crept closer until her form finally appeared next to the sprawling branches of the tree.

Of course she would come here. The entirety of Castle Chridhe was in an uproar searching for her, but I knew exactly where she would be.

Her white dress was hardly distinguishable against the blanket of snow that had fallen around her. Dark brown waves fell down her back, the color contrasting sharply with the flurries that had settled in her braids and the brilliant diamonds in her crown.

I clenched my fists at the pathetic sight before me. She was about to be Queen, and here she was lying broken on the ground over the disappearance of a man who never deserved her to begin with. My brother.

I shook my head, clearing it of those thoughts. Of any thoughts I had of my brother or why he went missing the morning of his wedding, and most importantly of the crying princess before me who was too lost in her own world to realize what was going on right in front of her.

These two. These two are going to be the death of me.

I had been given an assignment, to locate the princess and bring her back inside. It was a mission like any other. I schooled my expression and tried to rein in some of the rage I felt at the situation.

Making sure my footsteps were loud enough to get her attention this time, I stepped closer. I was close enough to see that her elegant fingers had turned purple in the frost, and she was trembling much more violently than even this frigid weather called for.

Her head tilted at the sound of my approach, but she still didn’t turn.

“I told you to leave me.” Her voice was strained and raw.

I cleared my throat, and I felt rather than saw her sigh.

“Now is not the time for your judgment, Logan.” At least she sounded lofty and angry now. Maybe she’d even progress to getting off the ground eventually. “Feel free to be elsewhere,” she finished up.

I glared at her back. If only she knew how much I would rather be anywhere other than there.

But I couldn’t say that, so I said nothing at all.

We stayed that way, locked in a standoff, until I finally couldn’t take it anymore. I needed to find my brother, and I needed her to keep all of her limbs. So, it was either break the silence or let her succumb to frostbite.

“Will ye be walking back on your own, or shall I carry ye, Highness?”

The look she gave me could’ve cut glass, but she was finally off the ground and moving, though she stumbled and limped the entire way.

Sod it.

“Don’t even think about—” She held up a hand to stop me, but I ignored her. She’d acted out enough for one morning, and we had more important things to worry about than her pride.

Despite knowing she might take a swing at me, I reached out and scooped her off her feet. There was no way she’d keep all of her toes at this rate, anyway.

I ignored her insults and protestations and just focused on getting her back inside, one crunching step at a time, but I couldn’t keep my thoughts from repeating on an angry loop.

This wasn’t the first time I had cleaned up my brother’s mess, but it was still hard to believe he could be so incredibly selfish.

“Excuse me?”

I hadn’t realized I’d said that last part out loud.

The fact that she had the nerve to be angry when I was the one stuck carrying her freezing body inside caused a different sort of fury. I took a deep breath, prepared to bite my tongue as usual, but then I got a look at her lofty, indignant face.

She wanted a fight? I’d give her one.

—from THE LOCHLANN TREATY series

Read book 1: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07L37BP6T

Listen on Audible: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B4TVRNQD
