Body | When Elliot sees me approaching them, I see the panic in his eyes.
Owen's words from last night replay in my head.
“Maybe he's screwing with someone as we speak. "
"Elliot, what's going on?" I look at him, then at her, and back at him.
He quickly stands up from his seat. "She was just leaving. Weren't you, Clara?
She bats her eyelashes rapidly. "Honey, I think it's time for her to learn the truth. Don't you agree?"
Clara laughs, looking at me. "I'm the woman who slept with him yesterday and the days before."
"Taylor, please let me explain." He has the nerve to plead with me, after what he did.
No. I won't stay here and listen as he tries to find an excuse for what he did.
"Taylor, please. I want to talk to you." He tries again.
"There's nothing to talk about" I snap at him.

————————

I take the stairs to go to my apartment. I’m so lost in my thoughts, that I don’t pay any attention to my surroundings.
"Watch it!” Someone warns me.
I look up, and a man that I have never seen before is standing right in front of me. He has dark hair cut in a military style and deep blue eyes. I see tattoos on his neck that seem to go all the way down to his torso. I can’t help, but think how handsome he is. I take a step back to put some distance between us.
He must be my new neighbour.
I smile as I present my hand to him. “Hello, my name is Taylor Walker. What’s your’s?”
He glares at me as if I’m already a nuisance to him. “Annoyed.” He let out as he walks past me.
Rude! I say to myself before I keep walking up the stairs.
I unlock the door with my keys and look through my mail. “Bills. Bills. Bills.” I mumble to myself.
I will deal with them later. Right now, all I want is to take a cup of coffee before I put myself pretty for my date with Elliot.
I don’t smoke or drink. My only dope is coffee. I need at least four cups per day, and that’s when I have a good day.
As I make a cup of coffee for myself, I take a disposable cup to make another one. I don’t know why I even bother with this. So why am I purring a second cup for a man I don’t even know, is beyond me.
Okay, I’ll admit. I didn’t like our first encounter.
I wonder if he takes sugar or milk. He seems like a man that likes his coffee black.
I bite my lips nervously as I pass my threshold.
Why am I doing this again? I ask myself on the way to his apartment.
I know where he leaves. He’s my next-door neighbour.
I clear my throat as I knock on his door.
No response.
I knock again.
“What the freak do you want?” He snaps at me while he opens his door.
My heart skips a beat. Maybe it’s because of his deep blue eyes that they keep staring at me as if they want to devour my soul or something.
I smile so he won’t notice how nervous he makes me. “Uhmm, I wanted to properly welcome you to the building.” I give him the cup of coffee that I made for him.
He takes a drag at his cigar, looking at my body all the way up to my eyes. “Are you here, because you want to freak?”
My jaw drops on the floor. “What? No!” I nearly scream at him.
He chuckles, seeing my reaction. “That’s what I thought.” He starts to close the door.
“Wait, you could at least tell me your name.” I won’t back down, even if his words made me uncountable. I put my hand in my chest to give a little drama. “Don’t tell me that a man at your size is scared by a little woman like myself.” It’s my turn to tease him.
I’m five foot tall, and he’s like six. He’s a mountain man.
He takes the cup from my hand. “I’m not scared. Thank you for the coffee, buttercup.” He then closes the door in my face.
Argh!
You don’t get to take my coffee and not answer my question.
I knock on his door harder this time.
“Leave me the freak alone!” He says, glaring at me.
I shake my head stubbornly. “Not until you tell me your name. It’s rude otherwise.”
“You won’t leave me the freak alone, is that it?” He let out a growl. “Owen Blake. Now Piss off!” Once again he closes the door in my face.
I smirk as I walk back to my place.
I look at the time. “Freak! I’m going to be late for my date with Elliot. I have to hurry to get ready.”
I drink my coffee in a hurry and run inside the bathroom to take a shower.
Elliot and I have been together for over a year now. He wants me to move in with him, but I don’t want to. I love my independence and my apartment to give them up.
I brush my teeth after my shower as a towel covers my body.
As I look inside my closet, I wonder what I’m going to wear. I think I’m going to go with my green cocktail dress and some black heels. I decided to put light makeup on myself.
I run, hearing my cell phone inside the kitchen. “Hello.”
“Hey, baby,” Elliot says over the phone. “I’m sorry, but I have to reschedule our date. I have an emergency at work that I can’t get out of.”
I sigh. It’s not the first time that this has happened.
“I can always come over tomorrow.” He suggests.
“Sure.”
“I am sorry, but I truly have to go now. See you tomorrow.” He hung up before I have the chance to say goodbye to him.
I just got dressed for nothing.
I need some air.
I grab my jacket to go upstairs to the rooftop. I love to go there and think.
As I arrive, I stare up at the sky. A full moon is out tonight.
I hear a noise and when I look to where it was coming from, I jump as I see a shadow not far from me.
“Relax, buttercup. It’s just me.” He smirks, seeing my reaction.
I put my hand on my chest while my heart beat fast. “God, Owen. Warn someone before you give them a heart attack.”
He takes a drag from his cigar, as he keeps staring at me.
Will he stop doing that?
“You know, one of these days, this will kill you.” I point at what he has in between his fingers.
He exhales the smoke from his lungs while his eyes try to pierce my soul.
I feel nervous under his stare, but at the same time, I feel drawn to them.
“Who cares how I would die. Eventually, everyone will meet their fate. Not that I care, but where are you going dressing up like that?”
I look down on myself. “I was supposed to go out on a date with my boyfriend. He cancelled at the last minute. He has an emergency at work.”
Owen licks his lips. “Maybe he’s screwing with someone as we speak.”
I cross my arms in front of me, feeling annoyed by him. “Why are you so mean to me? I never did something to deserve this. Besides, I trust him. He would never do something like that to me.”
I take a few steps to leave but stop at the last minute. “All I did was try to be nice to you, and that’s what I get.”
He frowns his eyebrows. “I never asked you freak. It’s not my problem if you can’t handle the truth.”
“Ugh, I’m leaving,” I say as I step further away from him.
“Good riddance.” He says loud enough for me to hear him.
Owen’s words start to hunt me more than they should. I trust Elliot. He’s a good man. I’m sure all he wanted was a reaction from me, and he succeeded.
That’s all and nothing else.
I trust Elliot. I say one more time.

I look around my apartment, and I’m satisfied with the cleaning. I’m not a clean freak. I just love my apartment to be spotless. While I cleaned my apartment, it distracted me from what happened yesterday.

Owen’s words still bother me.

“
Maybe he’s screwing with someone as we speak.”

Ugh! Why did he have to say this?

I know it isn’t true. I trust Elliot. When we spend time together, he never gives me the impression that he’s cheating. He’s always a sweetheart.

I’m so lost in my thoughts that when the door’s bell ring, I jump a little.

“It must be Elliot,” I say to myself as I go to answer the door.

“Hey, baby.” Elliot smiles at me, holding a huge bouquet of red roses in his hands.

Like I said, a sweetheart.

I love roses. I think they are pretty, but they aren’t my favourite kind. The flower that I love the most is called sakura in Japanese. Which means cherry blossom.

“Are those for me?” I ask him.

He smirks. “Why of course. Only the best for my girlfriend.”

“What did I do to deserve such a gift?” I play along.

“Do I need a reason to spoil you?” He wonders in a playful tone. “I saw them, and I thought of you.”

Out of nowhere, someone chuckles behind Elliot. As my boyfriend moves to the side, I see Owen ready to go inside his apartment while he has an arm around a woman’s waist.

Off course.

“
Are you here, because you want to freak?”
I remember Owen saying those words to me.

Stop thinking about this, or you’re going to blush in front of him, and FYI you aren’t interested in him. You have a boyfriend so you can forget it. I scold myself.

“So this is the boyfriend.” Owen looks at the flower in Elliot’s hands. That’s what I thought.” He laughs, guiding his guest inside his apartment.

What did he mean by that’s what I thought?

Is he referring to his words from last night?

Why do I even bother racking my brain over this?

Owen isn’t worth my time if he's acting like a jerk.

Elliot clears his throat once we are inside my place. “So, who was that?”

I take the bouquet from his hands. “Owen Blake, my new neighbour.”

He nods his head, but he doesn’t seem happy. “What did he mean by that what I thought? Did you speak to him?”

I open a kitchen cabinet to grab the vase. “He’s my new neighbour. I couldn’t ignore him.”

Even if he’s an hip.

“So.” He rubs his chin with his fingers. “What did he mean when he said that’s what I thought?” He repeats the question.

I bite my lips nervously. I don’t know how he will react if I tell him, but I can’t lie to him. That won’t be fair. Besides, I don’t have anything to hide.

I pour some water inside the vase. “I told him that you were working late last night, and he said that it was because you were cheating on me. “

He frowns. “Did you believe him?”

I shake my head. “Of course not. I know you will never do such a thing to me.”

He let out a sight. “I don’t like this.”

I turn my head to look at him. “You don’t like what?”

He folds his arms in front of him. “Him. He seems dangerous. You should stay clear of him. Better yet, come live with me permanently.”

Not this again!

We already talked about this. He knows exactly where I stand on that matter. How should I put this in words so I won’t upset his feelings? He barely stepped inside my apartment, and we are already talking about this.

Yes, we argue sometimes. We are a couple. Everyone argues sometimes.

I cut the edges of the roses before I put them in the vase. “ We talked about this. I’m not going to move in with you, just because you dislike my neighbour. I’m a big girl, I can take care of myself.”

Freak!

Was I too harsh?

Elliot inhales sharply, nodding his head.

I know he’s not happy with my answer, but it’s the truth. I’m not saying. I’m saying not right now.

Maybe it’s time to change the subject?

Before I have the chance to do any of that, I feel Elliot’s arms circling my waist from behind. “I’m sorry, okay? I don’t come here to argue with you.

It’s like he read my mind.

I turn around to bring my arms around his neck. “So, how was work yesterday?”

Elliot makes a face, looking at me. “I don’t want to talk about work when I’m with you.”

It’s not the answer that I was looking for. I can’t blame him as I didn’t give him the answer that he wanted. So I will put this matter to the side and concentrate on my boyfriend.

I smile at him. “And do tell me, what do you have in mind?”

Elliot smirks before he pecks my lips. “Trust me, baby, I have an idea, but first I want us to go out, and then later at my place, I will show you what I have in mind.”

Yesterday, I took the time to make myself pretty for our date that didn’t even happen. If he wants to take me out, he will have to take me with what I’m wearing.

I move away from him to go grab my purse and my jacket.

“Are you going to change first?” He wonders, looking at my body.

I put my hand on my waist. “Are you saying that what I’m wearing isn’t good enough for you?

“No.” He’s quick to say. “It's just that I love seeing you in a cute little dress.”

I cross my arms in front of me. “If you haven’t ditched me yesterday, you would have seen me into one.”

“It wasn’t my fault. I had an emergency, and you know it.” His words raise a little as he speaks.

That’s exactly what I wanted to avoid us arguing.

I go to him and peck him on the cheek. “I’m sorry, okay. I don’t know why I said that. I know it was out of hand on my part. Can we go now?”

He leaves a peck on my forehead. “I’m sorry too.”

Elliot takes my hand in his to guide us out of my place. I guess he doesn’t want to argue either.

As we walk, a noise that comes from Owen’s apartment makes me freeze on the spot.

“Yes! Yes! Blake, yes!”

I bite my lips. I never screamed this way when I’m intimate with Elliot. Am I missing something? I’m not saying that our drill life is boring, I’ve never been so loud.

Is it me, or does Elliot make us walk faster than necessary?

I look around after the hostess of the restaurant shows us our table. As I look around, I notice that everyone is wearing nice clothes. We are definitely in a luxury fashion restaurant.

I should have probably listened to Elliot and worn something nicer.

Did he do it on purpose?

No, I’m sure he didn’t. I don’t even know why it crossed my mind.

As I sit on the chair, I notice that the woman who’s sitting to my right is judging me for the way she’s looking at me. Maybe it has something to do with what I’m wearing. I feel undressed. Is it as if everyone’s judging me? I clear my throat, looking at the menu instead.

Elliot didn’t notice anything. He’s on the phone with someone from his work. I don’t mind. I’m used to it by now.

“No. No, this isn’t a good idea.” Elliot frowns as he speaks. He doesn’t seem happy. “We will deal with this tomorrow.” He hung up right after.

I look at him with concern. “Is everything ok?”

“Mmhmm.” He mumbles.

I won’t push on the matter. If he wants to talk about it, he will.

A young woman around my age stands beside us. “Hello, my name is Lucy. I will be your waitress for tonight. Are you ready to order?” She asks with a smile on her lips.

I look through the menu, and even though everything seems delicious. I decided to go with something light. “A Caesar salad for me.”

She nods her head, writing it on her pad. “Anything to drink?”

I shake my head. “No. Just water, please.”

Lucy turns her intention to my boyfriend. “And you, sir?”

“I’m going to go with the lamb shanks and a bottle of your finest beverage.” He closes the menu and gives it to her.

I let out a sigh. It’s not that I’m bothered that he has money, but he doesn’t have to show it every time we go out. He would have brought me to a food truck for our date, and I would still enjoy myself. I don’t need much. Just spending time with him would be enough for me.

Elliot takes my hand once Lucy leaves with our order. “So, what did you do today?”

I give him a smirk. “I don’t want to talk about work. Wasn’t what you wanted?”

He let out a chuckle. “I guess I deserve that.”

I look to my right, and the woman from earlier once again is staring at me. The guy that’s with her is trying to get her intentions, but he falls miserably.

Poor guy.

As Elliot looks at the same woman, I notice his expression change for only a second.

I’m about to ask him what’s up with that when I’m distracted by Lucy as she brings our meals.

I get up from my seat. “If you’ll excuse me, I’m going to powder my nose.”

Elliot takes my hand to leave a peck on my skin. “Ok.”

I’m not going to powder my nose. It was better to say this than say I’m going to the toilet to do the number one. I have manners.

Once I’m finished, I look at my reflection in the mirror. The thing I love the most about me is my hair. At first, you think they are black, but when the light hits them, the brown shines through them.

As I walk back to my table, I stop on my track. I see the woman from earlier sitting in my seat while she talks with Elliot. He doesn’t seem happy with her presence.

What’s wrong with this picture? I wonder.

When Elliot sees me approaching them, I see the panic in his eyes.

Owen’s words from last night replay in my head.
“
Maybe he’s screwing with someone as we speak.”

Am I gullible to think that Elliot isn’t cheating on me? I have to get to the bottom of this before I make any accusations. I could be wrong here. It can be nothing.

“Elliot, what’s going on?” I look at him, then at her, and back at him.

He quickly stands up from his seat. “She was just leaving. Weren’t you, Clara?

She bats her eyelashes rapidly. “Honey, I think it’s time for her to learn the truth. Don’t you agree?”

I cross my arms in front of me. “And who exactly are you?”

I suspect what’s going on.

Clara laughs, looking at me. “I’m the woman who slept with him yesterday and the days before.”

I can’t believe this. He told me that he wasn’t cheating.

I look around, and everyone is staring at us.

I can’t believe what is happening.

“Taylor.” I hear Elliot says my name.

I ignore him completely. I go grab my coat and purse to get out of here. On the way out I call a uber company to come and pick me up.

Once I’m outside, waiting. Someone grabs my hand, and I know who that is. I’m quick to remove my hand from his hold.

“Taylor, please let me explain.” He has the nerve to plead with me, after what he did.

No. I won’t stay here and listen as he tries to find an excuse for what he did. I ignore him completely as I look ahead me.

“Taylor, please. I want to talk to you.” He tries again.

“There’s nothing to talk about” I snap at him.

“Elliot, there you are.” Clara joins us outside. “Now that she knows, we can finally be together.”

Don’t cry. I say to myself. Not here, and certainly not in front of her.

He turns to look at her to ask her to leave. An argument between them starts, and thankfully, I see the uber appear on the road.

Neither of them notices that I get in the uber.

All I want is to go home. A tear falls down my cheek as I try to keep it at bay. The driver doesn’t seem to be effective in my situation. I’m sure in his line of work he saw this a lot of times.

I stand in front of my door with the keys in my hand. I don’t want to go in. Something tells me that Elliot is on his way to talk to me. I don’t want to see him.

A stupid idea coss my mind.

I’m sure that I’m going to regret this, but for now, it’s my best option. Elliot will never think to search for me there.

I walk until I’m in front of Owen’s door and knock on it.

Freak! Maybe the girl that he was with is still with him.

I’m about to turn around as I change my mind when his door opens.

He frowns at me. “It’s you again.”

“I’m sorry to bother you.” I feel shy under his stare.

I don’t know why I’m standing here. I don’t even know the guy. I swallow my pride. “Can I come in, please? I argued with Eliott, and I’m not ready to face him yet.”

To my surprise, he opens his door wider, just enough for me to enter his place. |
