🚨 Coaches, therapists, men’s groups facilitators… 🚨
STOP asking men “how are you feeling.”
Most of us men have NOT been taught HOW to feel our feelings.

Many of us learned that feeling our feelings isn’t ok, will cause us to be rejected by others.

Or is somehow a threat to our value, relationships, etc.

What i’ve found is that using different language can actually help a man identify what he’s feeling quickly, while asking “what are you feeling” can often cause him to freeze up, go numb, self-protect, or become defensive.

Instead, ask something like “what’s happening in your body right now?” Or “What are you experiencing while we talk about this?”

Now, obviously this is very context dependent (for example, if you’re in an argument with your boyfriend or husband, asking “what are you feeling in your body right now” might not go over well).

But, in a therapeutic setting or coaching environment (or if you just want to understand whats happening inside a man in your life), the phrases I provided in the slides can be incredibly helpful.

And men, this goes for you too. Instead of asking yourself or other men in your life “what am I/You feeling?” Ask “What’s happening inside of you right now?” Or “What am I experiencing?” (then look for physical sensations like tightness, tension, relaxations, heat, cold, tingling, etc).
