Chapter 1
On a rainy night in Clifton City, lightning flashed across the sky, followed by a frightening shriek from behind the bushes in the dark. A flock of birds fled from the trees, ruffled by the movement.

Behind the bushes, Cassandra Spencer, dressed in an all-white maternity outfit, was drenched from head to toe.

Strands of wet hair clung to her forehead. She was bleeding from a visible gaping wound on her head. Her blood streamed into the bushes along with the raindrops.

Judging from the size of her baby bump, she seemed to be in her late trimester.

Cassandra grimaced at her friend, Jennifer Xavier, who had just attempted to murder her. She trembled all over, perhaps from the cold or hatred, unable to wrap her head around Jennifer's actions.

She bellowed, "Jennifer, why did you do this to me?"

Earlier that day, Jennifer had called her to go shopping for baby supplies. Cassandra had gotten into Jennifer's car and lost consciousness after she had taken a drink Jennifer had offered her.

When she had woken up, she had found herself in the bushes.

Grinning maliciously, Jennifer cut Cassandra's face with the pocket knife in her hand like a madwoman, without any mercy.

Cassandra screamed in agony as a wave of anguish washed across her. Meanwhile, Jennifer seemed to revel in her friend's pain.

She was seething. "Cassandra, blame this on your smooth-sailing life. You lost your parents, but they left their stock options to you. And why did you get knocked up before marriage?"

Jennifer raised the knife once more. Blood dripped down from the blade. Hatred filled her eyes as she slashed Cassandra's other cheek with the knife.

"Ahh!" Cassandra was too weak to dodge the attack and grimaced from the new wound. She was more tortured by Jennifer's betrayal than the physical pain. She felt as if she could die.

Sobbing, she confronted Jennifer. "We're childhood friends. How could you do this to me?"

She struggled to understand why Jennifer would want to murder her when, just a few hours ago, they had been enjoying coffee together.

A strike of lightning flashed across the sky, illuminating the sinister grin on Jennifer's face, which seemed to foretell Cassandra's end.

In fact, Jennifer had been waiting for this opportunity for many years.

She hissed, "Cassandra Spencer, you may be the Clifton City genius, but I have hated you and that face of yours for ten years.

"Did you really believe that you were carrying Aaron's baby? You're terribly wrong! Nine months ago, you fell into my trap and slept with a random man. I'm the one expecting with Aaron's baby."

Cassandra was stunned by the revelation. Her eyes widened, slowly filling with rage. How could Aaron Lundy, her childhood friend, work with Jennifer to betray her?

A few months ago, she had naïvely believed that Aaron was the man she had slept with.

Worse, Aaron had never denied the fact and had even advised her to keep the baby. When she had refused to do so, he had fallen on his knees and begged her.

She was aghast to learn that Aaron wanted her dead as well. She caught something by a tree nearby and found him standing in the rain, staring at her emotionlessly.

That sight broke her heart. She breathed laboriously as she grasped tightly onto the wilted grass on the ground.

Jennifer cackled with glee. "Cassandra, I finally have a chance to enjoy your tortured face. Do you know how much I hated you in the past ten years? You were supposed to be a good luck charm for me, but you outshined me in every aspect."

She suddenly inched closer to Cassandra, who appeared confused by her remark about a good luck charm.

Jennifer revealed the harsh truth with an evil grin. "You were the precious daughter of the Spencer family, but all of that changed when you were eight years old.

"Your family lost everything because of my dad's plan. He's also responsible for the deaths of your three older brothers. After the downfall of the Spencer family, Dad snatched up all your family assets.

"But a fortune teller told us that your star sign made you a good candidate to ward off bad luck for me. That's the only reason we kept you alive.

"When you reached the legal age, we got you to sign the documents to transfer the stocks under your name to Aaron this morning. Cassandra, you're freaking silly. You only have yourself to blame for all this."

Hearing that, Cassandra let out an agonizing shriek.

How could she have lived under the same roof as her family's enemy for ten years? Not only that, but she had also transferred her parents' stocks to the very people who had harmed them.

All these years, she had never been suspicious of the Xaviers.

Glowering at Jennifer, Cassandra seethed in anger. "Jennifer Xavier, I will haunt you even if I'm dead!"

Feeling satisfied after seeing Cassandra in pain, Jennifer dragged her up from the ground with astonishing strength.

She growled, "Fine, Cassandra. Die!"

Without hesitation, she shoved Cassandra into the lake by the street.

Chapter 2
Six years later, Cassandra stood in front of her parents' graves at Hope Hill Memorial Park with a heavy heart.

She had never suspected the Xaviers because they had taken her in and treated her well after she had tragically lost her family at the tender age of eight years old.

She had always believed that her parents and brothers had passed in an accident, leaving her the sole surviving family member.

She had been utterly shocked to learn that the tragedy had been orchestrated by the Xaviers.

"Dad, Mom, I'm back. From now on, I will avenge you," she vowed with determination and hatred.

After placing a wreath on their graves, she left the memorial park without looking back.

In her head, she muttered, "Clifton City, I'm back."

She left the cemetery and headed to her car, which was parked by the forest. Before she reached for the car door, someone had pulled her into a hug.

She picked up a masculine scent and instinctively tried to break free, only to hear a smooth voice ringing in her ear. "Save me."

She frowned, noticing a thick scent of blood. Then, she heard someone yelling from afar, "Go! That loser can't be far away. Look for him in that direction!"

Cassandra squinted and saw seven men in suits running in her direction.

A wealthy man being hunted down at the cemetery?

She negotiated, "I can save you, but what will you offer me in return?" Her voice was devoid of emotion.

The man was weak and dizzy from the loss of blood. He conceded, "Anything you want."

Having received his promise, Cassandra opened the door and helped the man into the car. She swiftly locked the doors, leaving a window halfway open.

She heard footsteps nearing them. Before she even had time to take a better look at the man's face, a cool breath hit her cheeks, and the man kissed her.

She attempted to free herself, but he threatened, "You'll be dead if you push me away."

Under threat, she silently cussed him out but refrained from fighting back to avoid trouble. She struggled to take off his jacket in an attempt to mislead others into thinking they were lovers.

While they were making out, she felt a warm sensation on her belly, where his blood had trickled onto her shirt.

He had only wanted it to be a brief kiss, but her lips were so sweet that he couldn't help himself from exploring more. Cassandra felt as though she was about to drown in the kiss.

As the footsteps neared, they heard an angry male voice cursing, "Oh! Get a room!"

Then, the man outside left while cussing. Hearing that, Cassandra finally shoved the man away and growled, "Sheesh, I nearly couldn't breathe from the kissing."

The man let out a muffled sound from the pain, but a grin was playing on his lips as he lay under the shadows. It was only then that she realized that she was pressing against his wound.

Although his head hung low and his face was obscured by strands of hair falling over, she felt his intimidating presence. She warned, "Sit tight. We'll leave from here first."

Crawling to the driver's seat, she drove the car away from the cemetery. The man endured the excruciating pain and hung his head while leaning against the seat.

Once she drove to a forest nearby, Cassandra waited until she noticed the luxury cars leaving through her rearview mirror.

Assuming the pursuers were gone, she wiped her lips with disgust, as though she had been bitten by an animal.

The man picked up on her action and frowned with rage.

Cassandra left the car to get the first aid kit from the trunk to tend to the man's wound. She unbuttoned his shirt and found a long, gaping wound on his belly.

She had had her fair share of experience treating the injured, but not many could endure the pain in silence like this man did.

Working quickly, she disinfected his wound, stopped the bleeding, and stitched it neatly. She bandaged his wound with expertise as he watched her hands with mixed feelings on his face.

She decided to help him to the best of her ability. After she tended to his wound, she rested in exhaustion. "It's done."

"Thank you." The man's voice was hoarse and raspy. He stared at her.

Cassandra finally looked at the man who had forcefully kissed her. When their eyes met, she was taken aback. The man had chiseled features, and his eyes were cold and emotionless.

He seemed familiar, but she couldn't recall where they had met.

Still fuming from the unwanted kiss, she slapped him hard across the face.

Chapter 3
Shock flashed across the man's eyes when he realized he had been slapped. He stared keenly at the smug face in front of him with frosty eyes.

"You're the first woman to hit me," he drawled, his eyes darkening. He slowly rubbed his cheek with his blood-stained hand. His actions somehow seemed seductive.

Cassandra's heart skipped a beat as she looked away. She couldn't believe she had run into a handsome man who could charm a woman with just a simple move.

Still, she smirked and replied, "It's my honor. I saved your life, but you kissed me without my permission. Don't you think you deserve to be slapped?"

She had gone easy on him to spare his life. Given her personality, she would have kicked him out of the car if he hadn't been injured and being hunted down.

Now that she knew he was nothing but trouble, she heartlessly instructed him to leave. "Get out."

She wanted him out of her car. She was no saint; she needed to reach home safe and sound to make dinner for her children.

Joseph Hunter narrowed his eyes, snickering. There was a hint of aggression in his lazy demeanor.

For the first time in his life, he had run into a woman who treated him with disdain and even slapped him. But he liked his woman bold and sassy.

Cassandra reminded him of the woman he had slept with six years ago. The two were equally saucy. Besides, the kiss just now had brought back some memories.

Joseph was oddly irritated by the thoughts in his mind. Staring down, his expression hardened as he began negotiating. "Take me downtown. I'll give you whatever you want."

His car had rolled over during the chase, so he had no way of getting home.

Cassandra examined his face carefully. Where had she seen him before?

His features were perfect. But his eyes were devoid of emotion. She could tell that he was a hot-tempered person.

Noticing a black car coming closer, she frowned and straightened up in the driver seat, momentarily giving up the idea of kicking Joseph out.

She was sure she had met him before, but she simply couldn't recall anything about it.

Meanwhile, Joseph relaxed when she finally started driving. He quietly leaned back against the seat and shut his eyes.

She stole a look at him from the rearview mirror, still trying to recall where they had met.

The trip to town didn't take too long. When they arrived, she asked, "Where shall I drop you?"

He merely replied, "At the intersection in front."

She stopped at the intersection.

Joseph glanced at her before saying flatly, "What do you want for saving me?"

Cassandra looked at his serious face with an amused expression. "You owe me one for now. Let's talk about it later."

He furrowed his brows with a deep look in his eyes. "I don't like owing others a favor, especially not women."

To him, women were endless trouble. He would much prefer dealing with money than woman.

To be more accurate, he preferred throwing money at problems. If a problem could be solved with money, it wouldn't be a problem.

She lifted a brow and smirked. "But I like being owed favors, especially from men."

Seeing how Joseph had a face that wasn't easy to forget, Cassandra felt confident that she could track him down and make him repay her favor one day.

Tension arose in the car. They exchanged looks for a few seconds before Joseph glided out of her car as though he weren't injured at all.

Her eyes gleamed as she stared at his movements. Then, she left the scene immediately.

In Joseph's eyes, she seemed worried that he would cling to her. Grinning, he finally recalled how they had met. He quickly came up with a plan for the next day.

Cassandra arrived home in the Arlington Vista neighborhood, but the house was empty. She panicked, wondering where her children were.

"Max, Mel, where are you?" Worried sick, she searched high and low but couldn't find her kids anywhere.

Not only that, the blood from her shirt was dripping to the floor, making a mess and filling the air with the scent of blood.

Fearing she would scare her children, Cassandra took a bath and discarded the bloodied shirt. Once she changed into a comfortable outfit, she grabbed her bag and left the house to look for her children.

Chapter 4
When Cassandra opened the door, she was greeted by her two twins and her good friend, Bernice Lester.

Bernice was the good Samaritan who had saved Cassandra on that rainy night six years ago. That night, Cassandra had been struggling to get out of the lake when Bernice had happened to pass by.

Bernice had immediately braked and hopped out of her car. She had taken Cassandra to the hospital, where Cassandra had given birth to twins.

Cassandra's daughter, Melanie, stared at her mom with surprise. "Mom, you're back!"

Looking visibly relaxed, Cassandra crouched and hugged her twins with a bright smile.

After the birth of the twins, Cassandra hadn't even had time to recover before she had escaped Clifton City to avoid being chased down by Jennifer and Aaron.

Fortunately, she and her twins had survived the ordeal. Since then, she had taken her mother's last name and gone by Cassandra Hendrix.

"My babies, where were you just now? I was so worried when I couldn't find you at home," Cassandra asked.

Maxwell and Melanie Hendrix stared back at their mother with a witty look in their eyes. The eldest, Maxwell, was reserved and was especially so in front of Cassandra.

After some hesitation, he said in a hushed voice, "Mom, we went out to play and ran into Bernice."

Bernice forced a smile and stole a glance at the little guy. She was proud of herself for teaching him how to lie.

Cassandra opened the door and gestured to Bernice, saying, "Come in."

After they entered the house, Bernice switched on the TV smoothly, careful not to make Cassandra suspicious.

The news was on, and the channel was reporting on Jennifer Xavier and Aaron Lundy's engagement ceremony. The headlines flashed across the screen.

"Jennifer Xavier allegedly cheating on her fiancée with a famous celebrity."

"Jennifer Xavier confirmed to have undergone surgery to get rid of a baby once."

"Aaron Lundy suspected of being involved in Cassandra Spencer's disappearance after seizing the Spencer family's stocks."

The engagement between Jennifer and Aaron appeared to have been called off.

Cassandra flinched a little. Even though six years had passed, Jennifer still hadn't succeeded in marrying Aaron. Only Cassandra knew how selfish Aaron could be.

Staring at her lovely twins, she felt relieved that they weren't Aaron's flesh and blood. She was always grateful for her two intelligent kids, who seemed to mature beyond their age.

Then, she demanded answers from them. "Tell me, what were you up to just now?"

Maxwell stared at his feet quietly. He dared not admit that he was out seeking revenge for his mother.

His younger sister, Melanie, blinked innocently at Bernice before turning to Cassandra nervously, wondering if she had found out about it.

Bernice rolled her eyes at Cassandra and chided her, "You should see that look on your face. You're scaring them."

Cassandra pressed her lips together, not saying another word.

Bernice turned to the twins and told them to go to their room. The twins immediately listened and rushed to their room. They were scared of their mother.

After the kids were gone, Cassandra fumed at Bernice. "Bernie, how could you let them be? Do you know how dangerous it will be if Jennifer notices?"

After all, Bernice knew how Cassandra had been treated years ago.

Knowing Cassandra was angry, Bernice held her hand and reassured her, "Don't worry. They covered their tracks well."

Cassandra felt relieved upon hearing that.

Bernice changed the topic. "By the way, you should have a good rest today since you're starting work at Hunter Group tomorrow. I heard that the president is a bad-tempered cripple. Do you think you can handle him?"

Sensing Bernice's worry, Cassandra flashed a confident smile at her.

"You know my professional abilities. I won't give him anything to complain about. It's been six years, and it's time for me to settle the score in Clifton City."

Cassandra's eyes filled with resentment. She felt a piercing pain every time she recalled Jennifer's words on that fateful night.

The next day, Cassandra left her children in Bernice's care and went to work.

The morning sunlight shone warmly. Standing on the street, Cassandra raised her head to look at the Hunter Group building, an iconic landmark in Clifton City.

She had accepted the offer to be transferred to Clifton City, and the position of secretary to the president happened to match her requirements.

She straightened her black suit, her eyes no longer filled with naïveté, but with maturity and resentment.

She had lived in pain and hatred for six years. Every time Jennifer's words had replayed in her mind, she had suffered from heartache. She had been living out of spite.

She had been disfigured in the incident six years ago. Cassandra had only managed to regain her looks after undergoing multiple surgeries and medical treatments.

Her physical wounds might have healed, but she would never psychologically recover.

At the moment, Cassandra looked like a completely different person. Not even Jennifer would have recognized her. She had shed her youthfulness and carried herself with more maturity and experience.

She walked into the building, tapped her employee card, and passed the access gate. Then, she took the elevator to the president's office on the top floor to report to work.

Chapter 5
The spacious president's office sported a modern decor. The floor-to-ceiling windows near the office table showed off a panoramic view of Clifton City.

Sitting in a wheelchair, Joseph had a flat expression as he gracefully pored through the documents he had placed on his knees.

Then, he checked the time on his wristwatch. His expression hardened when he noticed that the new secretary was running late.

At that moment, his phone rang. It was a call from Lucas Green, one of his special assistants.

Lucas asked, "Mr. Hunter, is Ms. Hendrix reporting to work today?"

Joseph affirmed, "Yes."

"Sir, do you really want to get her into this mess? She's innocent."

Staring coldly at the bright sky, Joseph explained, "There's no such thing as being innocent. Since she agreed to transfer to the headquarters, she's destined to be a pawn."

Lucas interjected, "But sir, you had a night with Ms. Judd six years ago. Why don't you marry her instead?" He posed the question cautiously. He didn't want to come across as overstepping his boundaries.

Joseph frowned, and the two of them fell into silence. Lucas merely assumed that Joseph had chosen to use Cassandra as a pawn because he wanted to protect Mira Judd from the fallout.

After receiving no answer, Lucas excused himself. "Mr. Hunter, I'll get to work now."

Joseph put his phone down and stared out of the window, deep in thought. Another call came in, this time from Bryce Engleton, Joseph's best friend. Joseph answered the call with a look of annoyance.

Bryce asked, "Joe, have you made up your mind? Cassandra Hendrix—"

Leaning back lazily, Joseph remained unfazed. "Why are you still asking that question when the plan has already kicked off? Quit that nonsense. Cassandra Hendrix is the best candidate because she's smart.

"If she can get out of it unharmed," Joseph hesitated before looking far away and continuing, "I'll make it up to her."

"What about Mira? You had a night with her six years ago. Did you pick Cassandra to protect Mira?"

Joseph hung up on Bryce before the latter could say more. He sat in silence as he recalled what had happened six years ago.

After exiting the elevator, Cassandra jogged to the president's office because she was running late. She took a deep breath at the door.

She had been presented with the opportunity to be transferred to the headquarters in Clifton City because Joseph Hunter's special assistants, Derrick Ford and Lucas Green, had been transferred elsewhere.

After composing herself, she rapidly knocked on the door. A melodious male voice sounded from within. "Come in."

She opened the door and greeted her new employer, "Mr. Hunter, how are you? I'm the new secretary, Cassandra Hendrix …"

She introduced herself with a smile, but her voice trailed off when she laid her gaze on the wheelchair-bound man.

When their eyes met, sparks flew. She realized that he was the man she had slapped the day before.

Joseph seemed to relish her response. He smiled lazily, but somehow it was intimidating at the same time.

Blinking hard, Cassandra finally understood why Joseph had seemed so familiar. His side profile had once been printed on the cover of a business magazine she had come across.

According to the rumors, Joseph had been wheelchair-bound and became incapable after a car accident when he was 20 years old.

However, being the genius entrepreneur he was, he had single-handedly taken Hunter Group to greater heights of success.

The most intimidating thing about him was his unbearable temper.

She noticed something amiss. He was rumored to be crippled after the car accident, but that didn't match up with the image of the long-legged man she had saved the day before.

Had she accidentally found out about a secret that he had been keeping for years?

A shiver ran down her spine. She felt as though her head and neck were going to split. Steadying herself, she lowered her head and announced, "Mr. Hunter, we have ten minutes left before the morning meeting."

She decided to act as if they had never met before. What was he going to do about it?

Joseph smirked when he noticed that. "Let's go."

Feeling relieved, Cassandra scooped up the meeting materials and stole a confused glance at him.

Who would be the one to wheel him around? After all, his special assistants were not there.

Just when she was about to ask, Joseph pressed a button, and the electric wheelchair glided out of the office and toward the meeting room.

Cassandra collected herself as she realized that Joseph was using an electric wheelchair. She instantly dismissed what she had been about to say.

The meeting room, measuring 1,000 square feet, was furnished with a long glass table and chairs. The attendees' nervous faces were reflected on the table.

Joseph's domineering presence added to the tension in the air.

The content of the morning meeting was related to Jennifer Xavier.

Jennifer, who had debuted in the entertainment industry at 20 years old, was the brand ambassador for Hunter Group for their haute couture products.

As a result, her scandal had caused significant damage to the company's reputation.

Cassandra was riddled with worry when she overheard the discussion. If Joseph found out that her twins had played a role in leaking the scandal, he might punish her severely.

After all, he was known to be ruthless.

The executives put their jobs at stake by throwing out bold and unfiltered suggestions.

One recommended, "Mr. Hunter, we have to replace Ms. Xavier with someone else. With her current reputation, she will only hurt our company's image."

"Mr. Hunter, I bet she is involved in more scandals than what was made known. When the other scandals are exposed, our company will be badly affected."

The executives raised their voices agitatedly.

Joseph, who had remained still and astute like a hawk, finally opened his mouth.

"But I'm more interested in finding out the mastermind who leaked the scandal. That person deserves to be shredded into pieces."
