| Body | Tongue-tie, also known as ankyloglossia, is a congenital condition in which a string of tissue under the tongue, aka Frenulum or Frenum, is too tight or too short. This can cause restriction in normal tongue movement and prevent the tongue from functioning properly. <br /> •<br /> Some of the consequences of the tongue-tie include, but are not limited to: shallow latching, painful nursing, slow and poor weight gain for the baby, often diagnosed as “Failure-to-Thrive” without any underlying medical condition 😥 However, this is not the end, as these children continue to grow, their restricted tongue movement can cause speech delay or difficulty producing certain sounds like T, D, Z, S, TH, SH, or R. <br /> •<br /> We can easily treat the tongue-tie and restore the normal function of the tongue by using a CO2 laser. The benefit of using a laser for the frenectomy procedure is that it’s extremely precise and because the laser seals up the blood vessels and nerve endings during the procedure, there is minimal to no bleeding at all 👍🏻 Because there is no bleeding, stitches are not needed.
