🎏 Daniel (Dan) Pease was a Neurobiologist who revolutionized cell biology and helped develop UCLA Medical School, where he served as Chairman of the Anatomy Department. <br /> <br /> The year after completing his undergraduate training at Yale, Dan, the rare adventurer type, took a solo ‘round the world’ trip through Japan, China, Manchuria, Korea, Indochina, India, and Thailand. Upon his return, Dan worked as a chemist during WWII, followed by stints at Columbia, Princeton, and Stanford (no big deal). <br /> <br /> Dan and his wife Phyllis later moved to Los Angeles, where Dan continued his research at USC, working with the first electron microscope. By 1949, Dan and his drawings, the most advanced illustrations of nerve cells and chromosome structures for the era, were featured in LIFE magazine. His success and kind reputation at USC garnered the attention of cross-town rival UCLA, and with plans for a new medical school, they recruited Dan to join their faculty in 1951. <br /> <br /> Instead of simply providing a post-college break, Dan’s ‘round the world’ trip sparked a lifetime interest in acquiring and appreciating Asian art. <br /> <br /> In 1959, Dan and Phyllis designed their magnum opus, this Brentwood, Japanese-inspired home, to add to and display their collection. There is no architect on any permit record, only a contractor, Dudley Wolford, and an engineer, Joseph Halpern. <br /> <br /> Throughout their lifetime Dan and Phyllis asserted this home was their creation, and we have no reason to suspect otherwise. Dan’s knack for molecular detail, precise drawing, and his reputation as a brilliant “do-it-yourself” scientist provide enough clues to accept that he designed this one-of-a-kind home where, even until his final days, he could be seen repairing the roof or caring for his collection of precious orchids.<br /> <br /> Do-it-yourself, Dan Pease.
