"Where am I?" The guy started to speak.
"I'm doctor Johnson and Mr. Rodriguez you're in the hospital." I spoke professionally giving my "A-game".
"Sorry love, but could you tell me you're name?"
"My name is Doctor Johnson and you are the patient that I will be caring for the next month and a half. " I belted out feeling irritated and hot.
"Let me guess you're a nerd in high school?" He chuckled. Feeling offended I replied.
"Well, it definitely paid off then as I'm standing here and you're lying there."
————————
Suddenly the hospital doors bust open with a loud bang. Men came running through, their business shoes making clicking noises on the hospital floors.
Me, Maya and a few nurses just stared at them caught off guard.
"You guys gonna help us or what!" One of the men shouted at me. I broke out of the trance and the nurses beside me rushed to them.
There were already about 13 men in the emergency room and looks to be more coming in. All of them weirdly dressed in suits. Some were bleeding from their heads, having bruises, black eyes, and cuts on their arms.
In God's name we're them doing.
As I was already cleaning up on some men's cuts a two men came in hauling a guy in between them. Looking at the situation, that guy looks to have it worse than the others.
"Don't help us. Help them!" One of the men shouted, grasping his leg, panting for breath. "They both got shot."
My eyes went wide as well as Maya's and we quickly ran towards them.
Quickly I showed them to of them to the operating rooms. The men insisted they stay in the operating room.
"You aren't permitted in here, you have to leave," I told them calmly but with sternness in my voice.
"We are not leaving him alone with you." One of the men snarled at me. "I suggest you just let us stay doc cause we ain't leavin' our boss wif ya alone." The other men spoke having a southern drawl of accent.
I was flustered as there were protocols to follow but I can't keep arguing with them as a man's life is slipping through my fingers.
Making a 'tsked' sound I called about three on-call nurses to scrub in to assist me.
"The two of you need to wash your hands and wear a coat. If you're going to stay in there you need to at least be clean." I glared at them annoyed that I have to break the rules. I thought of all the consequences that follow having strangers or family members who are tied to this man lying on the table, here.
If someone tattle tales to a higher-up, let's just say I'm going to suffer more then a pay cut.
As I'm scrubbing my hands, a young resident from the hospital came tumbling beside me.
"Doctor Johnson, there's another gunshot patient in the ER." He stuttered looking scared and definitely unprepared.
"Have Doctor Marins take that patient and stop fussing about and focus. Each patient to the beds and scan them for wounds. Those that are more severe then the other treat it first. This is not uncommon, if you want to survive in the hospital you'll listen to me and follow the protocols that your Doctor has teach you." Believe me, this is me being a good doctor I suppose. In times like this, the resident has to learn or he'll forever be scared of a crisis. The lad seemed to use my words as some confidence as he stood straighter and nodded his head firmly to me. As if on a mission he ran back to the ER.
I went into the operating room and my nurses dressed me on my mask, gown, gloves and cap.
"May I know his name please." I turned to the men with the southern accent. He seems calmer and nicer.
"His name is Mateo Rodriguez."
I started to talk to the patient speaking him to see if he has any response.
"Scissors." I stretched my right hand waiting for a cooling metal sensation. Being delayed I looked up to see the nurse with wide eyes.
"Where are the scissors." I scolded.
"I-I'm sorry I forgot about it" She spoke frantically. "I-I'll go get it." As she was about to run out I called to stop her.
"We have no time. See me after this."
I gripped the white shirt of the patient and ripped it according to the seam.
"Girl you're strong." Southern accent said and wolf whistles.
"It's just fabric and please keep quiet is you are staying in here. I need concentration. " I controlled the urge to roll my eyes and diverted my attention back to the patient.
"Hey, chick what's you're name."
"Can you all please keep quiet! I'm trying to save this man and you're distracting me. I won't say this again the next time I'll throw you out."
I took in a few deep breaths and continued.
"What happened to him," I whispered. There was a bleeding hole on the side of his rib cage and shoulder as well as big cuts on his arms and chest.
I cleaned the open wounds which were still bleeding. Slowly and carefully grabbed my tweezers and took the magazine out. It was lodged in pretty deep on his side.
The other magazine was on his upper arm. It's not as deep but he won't be able to move it for a while. If he's lucky it would be healed by in a month and a half's time.
The other wounds were just cuts that need stitching but other than that. He's alright.
"We need to start cleaning his body. We can't risk any infections." I told the nurses and they lifted him off the table and onto a plastic-like stretcher.
Carefully we carried him to the wash area for patients and saw Maya there as well already cleaning her gunshot wound patient.
That guy was also out cold and I could see that he has a shot around his stomach region and a few cuts on his right leg.
"Hold him up please," I asked.
I started to wash his face since it's covered in sweat and blood than his body.
Now I can see his face. I felt my breath hitched.
He's.. actually really good looking...
He had eyebrows that are angled and full. A bit of a crooked nose which I'm going to guess that someone had probably broken it a few times. A very strong jawline and a stubble. Don't get my started on his full lip-
"Are you done doc?" One of his henchmen snapped me out of my thoughts. Clearing my throat, I nod and turned the water off.
Now that he is clean I could see his well-built body, chiseled chest, and 1 2 3 4 5 6 abs!
I couldn't stop staring and felt my mind wander to all the things I felt like doing to this man.
It took all the will power in me to stop staring at him and "drying" him as an excuse to touch him and asked the men to take him away.
Is it me or does it feel hot in here...
"We have to keep him here for observation. There might still be a small chance that the wounds will be infected. You guys can stay over and watch him if you like.
Hesitating for a second, they nod carrying both my and Maya's patient to check into hospital rooms.
Getting notified that my patient has been admitted into the best rooms of the hospital. The VIP rooms.
Giving out a sigh of irritation I made my way to the ER.
The thing is, I have to travel all the way to the other side of the hospital to check on him.
"Keep a close eye on two of them I need to start my rounds."
Maya had left for room 3 whilst I was in room 5.
A voice suddenly caught my attention as I looked up and saw the bluest shade of eyes staring at me.
I felt the air caught in my body and a big rush of heat in between my legs.
"Where am I?" The guy started to speak, eyes wandering across my body making me blush a bit at his boldness.
Clearing my throat, I shifted my legs trying to find relive but to no avail.
Seeing as he is very confused I first introduced myself to him.
"I'm doctor Johnson and Mr. Rodriguez you're in the hospital as your men dragged you and you're friend last night with wounds all over you. The side of your rib and arm has to heal due to the magazines." I spoke professionally giving my "A-game".
"Sorry love, but could you tell me you're name?" He asked me smiling looking at me up and down again.
That action alone made me come to the realization that he might be a womanizer as a gentleman would look at me with respect. And right now, the way Mr. Rodriguez is looking at me is anything but.
"My name is Doctor Johnson and you are the patient that I will be caring for the next month and a half. Dressing wounds will be done by a nurse after he or she has seen me do it for the first few times. Your only job Mr. Rodriguez is to stay in this room and rest. You might not be able to move your left shoulder or you might tear a few stitches and have to stay here any longer." I belted out feeling irritated and hot under his steely blue gaze.
He just sat there staring at me before-
"Let me guess you're a nerd in high school?" He chuckled. Feeling offended I replied.
"Well, it definitely paid off then as I'm standing here and you're lying there."
Next day, I went to the VIP rooms to do a follow up check up on Mateo Rodriguez.
That's unusual. His men are always guarding the door...
"...yes...yes I know...well get it done then. How? Must I explain to you how to do your job! Make sure nothing's left behind!"
I waited at the door for a while to give him some privacy to end his call and knocked.
"Ah, my favorite doctor. You still haven't told me your name love. It's been a while." He smiled at me and I couldn't help but smile back softly. Looking at his right hand I saw him gripping an expensive model phone.
"If you hold onto that phone any tighter you'll break it."
"A great observant you are Doctor. Did you manage to hear what I was talking about as well?" Mr. Rodriguez said looking at me with an unreadable gaze. Suddenly I felt like a prisoner going under interrogation. I didn't like the feeling. It made me feel like I did something terribly wrong for that few seconds I happen to chance upon hearing him talking.
"N-no. I just arrived." Stuttering was a big disadvantage for me when I was nervous or lying... "Why is there something I shouldn't be listening to?" I joked trying to change the atmosphere of the room, internally shaking off how scared I was...
"Now hold still I need to collect some blood for another round of testing. If it's clean, you'll be walking and moving in no time." I smiled gently moving towards him.
As I grabbed his hand suddenly I felt sparks. Pulling away I composed myself before getting the syringe.
"You ok doll?" He grabbed my hand and as a reflex, I pulled away. He frowned seemingly annoyed.
"Yes, I'm fine now please be still." I rubbed a swab of cotton filled rubbing spirits on a spot of his arm and found his vein, putting the syringe in and I exacted some blood sample.
"Why are you so distant from me?" He asked looking at me intensely. My body started to flush all over from the intense glare. I felt embarrassed and vulnerable at that point.
"I'm your doctor, Mr. Rodriguez. Not your companion or friend. If you ask any more inappropriate questions I have the right to not answer." I took the syringe out and clean the small wound with a solution and placed a plaster over it.
"Well, you could be if you give me a chance." He grabbed my hand again and by surprise, I looked into his eyes and sparks flew.
What's he doing to me...
"Sorry, Mr. Rodriguez but I'm not looking for a relationship right now and even so we can't happen. Believe me when I say that this is the best for you... and me. I overheard about your little reputation with women and I tend to not drift that way if you know what I mean." I replied sheepishly, not wanting to be here anymore than I have to.
He looked stunned and I pulled away from his hand walking out the door.
"You should have not pulled away kid." The same guy talked to me. "Mark. Nice to meet-cha." He smiled like a child and I decided immediately that I liked this man.
"Why should I have not pulled away?" I asked curiously, folding my arms.
"Because Boss is the type of guy who gets everything he wants and surprisingly you're on his list. Plus he won't stop till he gets you. So... get prepared." Mark patted my shoulder.
Pushing his hand away nicely I looked at the door peaking inside seeing Mateo sleeping soundly.
"Well. Mark. You can tell your boss to stop. I'm really not looking forward to a relationship. My apartment is small but big enough for me but if he saw it. He'll not even bother to stay for a coffee." I smiled and walked away.
Mateo has been discharged for about two and a half weeks now.
I recalled back when I said yes to him taking me out. After I said yes, he smiled and quickly pecked my cheek.
My hand lifted to touch that spot on my leg cheek, caressing it lightly. Before I could say anything, he left in a hurry saying he needed to deal with people at work and to be in touch with me soon...
Thinking back to my whole encounter with him. He doesn't even know my first name. This is going to be a problem...
"Now I've assembled all of you to remind that tomorrow, at 7.00 pm. You are all to be at a charity event, hosted by Harry and Susan Rodriguez."
Rodriguez... Are they related to Mateo? It's stupid of me to think a person with a very common surname is all related.
If I am not wrong, Harry and Susan Rodriguez is our hospital's biggest sponsors. They make sure our hospital is well funded and have charity events to raise money for cancer organizations for example. To put in basic words, they're billionaires.
"Aria! We need you now!" Maya shouted and I ran to put my surgeon clothes and went to my team.
"Doctor." One of my team members greets and I nod.
I stood with a few nurses beside me waiting for information. Soon I heard sirens and running.
A stretcher was wheeled in and the paramedics were covered in blood. Running towards them I started giving instructions.
"The girl's about 9. She got shot near the park. The magazine hit near her shoulder joint. Fingers are responsive and she just lost consciousness a minute ago." One of the paramedics filled me in and I nod thanking and wheeling the girl into the OR.
"Ok let's start. Scalpel." I grabbed my scalpel and made a slit on the wound.
Thick red blood came gushing and it filled my visuals. "Gauze." With a clearer view, I deduced that the magazine hit a major blood vessel.
"ECG is 89 dropping slowly. Blood pressure 108/68. Oxygen 80 and dropping."
"There's blood in her lungs. Tubes stat!" I yelled pulling the robes to unveil the girl's ribs
"Elevate the bed to 30 degrees." The bed moves up and Maya locates the in-between of the fourth and fifth rib and cleans the area.
A syringed was handed to me and I inserted into the cleaner area. I pulled back the syringed and saw blood. Feeling relieved that I found the right place. I then grabbed my scalpel and made a 2-3cm incision, using a 'Kelly Clamp' I widened the incision to gain access to the pleural space.
I place my finger into the pleural space confirm I'm right and feeling for any unexpected masses or tissue. Feeling nothing, I grab the chest tube and inserted into the incision site.
Blood began to flow out of the lung and into the tube. I suture the area as airtight as possible and switched back to the shoulder.
"Ok. How is the oxygen and ECG levels now?"
"Back to normal."
Nodding the nurse handed a pair needle holders and suture material.
"Suction." The blood was sucked away making gurgling sounds and the wound was clear for me to see.
I saw the magazine still lodged in the shoulder and used a pair of tweezers to get it out.
Locating the ruptured blood vessel, I threaded the hook-like needle at the vessel, pulled through, and hooked at the other vessel that's been cut into two.
I took my time slowly pairing the vessel back together.
"You should talk to her parents." Maya nudged me said we walked out of the OR.
I nodded and headed straight to the waiting area. As I walked out a woman wearing a red business shirt and black pencil skirt came running towards me shocking me slightly.
She latched onto me like a leech and stared at me with wide-panic eyes.
"Bella! Is Bella Ok?!" She screamed holding my arm painfully.
"Susan please!" A man wearing an expensive-looking suit ran after her hugging her gently asking her to let me go.
Finally, I gave her some peace by telling her- "Everything is fine." I pulled them up.
"Oh, thank god!" The woman cried tears of joy hugging her husband. Their eyes filled with relief and happiness when the news reached them.
"Thank you. Thank you for saving my daughter." They both thanked me. I shook their hands and accepted their gratitude.
"'May I know you're name?" The women asked smiling softly, light wrinkles creasing around her eyes with tear-stained cheeks.
"I am Doctor Johnson, ma'am." I smiled feeling proud and happy for myself. I'm not gonna lie and be humble. Saving someone takes work. I'm proud of myself for doing a good job.
"Thank you, doctor. I don't know what I've done if my daughter would've died." The husband came and grab my hands again shaking them. I bowed to show my sincerity and smiled.
Now that I am looking at them closely... this man looks really familiar. Blue ashen eyes, strong jawline, sharp nose, and salt-pepper hair indicating his age. The woman, his wife, has an oval face, high cheekbones big brown eyes, and long luscious black flowing hair. But you can tell by her wrinkles she is about the late forties. Does she look good in her late forties...
"You're daughter is fine. The magazine was at her lodged in her shoulder and it hit a major blood vessel. Blood was filling her lungs, therefore I had to perform a 'Thoracostomy'. A chest tube is inserted at the side of her tube cage to her lung draining the blood. And I extracted the magazine carefully to not damage anything further." I explained slowly and carefully knowing this much information is hard to digest. Nonetheless, I tried my best to ensure the parents of the patient knows what is happening.
"Still thank you." They smiled slightly shaken.
"Mum, Dad! Where's Bella!" A familiar voice shouted from behind me.
I turned around and my heart stopped...
Mateo?
What was he doing here?
