Body | *ahem*
.
Dear Reese Witherspoon,
I see you made this a Book Club pick. To properly explain how I feel, I’m going to quote Kelly Kapoor from The Office..… “Yeah, I have a lot of questions. Number one, how dare you.”
What a waste of a Book Club pick and waste of, what could have been, a decent thriller. 1 star.
.
There’s no way for me to write a review without a spoiler on this one, so if you’re inclined to read it I advise you to stop reading this now.
.
Maya is coming off Klonopin & is facing the harsh withdrawal process but she’s “self helping” with the aid of alcohol. She spirals deeper into paranoia and insomnia when a video surfaces of her ex boyfriend, Frank, at a diner with a woman who drops dead across the booth from him. Her best friend from 7 years ago also dropped dead with no known cause in front of Frank. Fear grips Maya as she tries to tell her boyfriend, Dan, and mother that Frank HAS to be behind this. He has to be a murderer. She recalls periods of time with hours lost in Franks presence. Essentially blacking out and having little recollection of where the time went or what was happening. This only gripes her obsessive need to pin him for the monster she knows he is.
No one takes her seriously. They think she’s becoming unhinged with her withdrawal since she looks like absolute shit. Not sleeping, not eating and relying on gin to get her through her days (not to mention, she threw up during dinner at Dans parents house) is not a good look.
.
Maya goes back to her childhood home as she tries to solve the mystery with woman dropping dead in Franks presence.
.
Here’s where the book took a stupid turn. He HYPNOTIZES people. 🙄🙄🙄 He makes himself appear younger, can fill “visions” of places in their heads (ie: a finished warm and cozy cabin that doesn’t exist. In reality, it’s just dirt and a sleeping bag in the woods.) He can also tell people when they are hypnotized to “slow your heartbeat down” to the point of it not beating any more. This didn’t even build with suspense. Once it got to this plateau, I simply thought “wait, wtf?” It played out so poorly and felt like such a toss away twist for a book that began strong.
.
This was dumb. |
