We hope you all had a positive day, and if not, we send you the love of 4 Creatures and hope that tomorrow is a brighter and better day!!<br /> If you didn&#039;t see this morning&#039;s post at Imo&#039;s Pizzeria, we urge you to go check out our latest regional food adventure, where we try the unique St. Louis style pizza, whenever you get finished with the educational adventure below!!<br /> Below is the Mary Meachum Freedom Crossing, which is part of the National Park Service&#039;s National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom, which is a collection of 700 historic sites across the country, as well as Canada and the Virgin Islands where humans helped other humans hide or escape the shackles of slavery to a free state, and then eventually Canada. <br /> This network of sites was originally run by regular everyday citizens, just like those who helped people escape death during WWII in Germany. These people, most often free Black people, risked jail, their own freedom, or even death to do what was right! <br /> Mary Meachum was the wife of Preacher John Berry Meachum, the founder of the first African American Church West of the Mississippi. Even though it was illegal, the Meachums taught Black people to read and write (because only through education can we truly be free), first in the church&#039;s basement, and later on a riverboat in the middle of the Mississippi River, where the law did not apply! <br /> Throughout their lives together, they purchased the freedom of over twenty people, who they would then employ and educate until those people could save up enough money to pay the Meachums back the price of their freedom, and like a wonderful pyramid scheme where nobody loses, the Meachums would then use that money to purchase the freedom of more enslaved people. They are also credited with helping many other still enslaved people escape to freedom and equality through the use of the Underground Railroad. <br /> It was at the spot pictured below, down by the Mississippi River in 1855, after her husband&#039;s death, where Mary and another free African American helped a boat full of people escape to the free state of Illinois on the other side of the river. They were immediately caught and arrested, but later cleared of all charges. The memorialized site has activities during the summer, including a reenactment of her river crossing and arrest, although when we went to check out the area, there was only an interpretive sign and the amazing mural below! The mural has Mary standing in the middle with outstretched arms in the center of the river, with waves made from arms and bodies, and on land behind her are trees made from upright fists! <br /> We encourage you to check out the amazing details of the mural, and to help you do that, we have a short video in the comments where you&#039;ll be able to see it a little closer!<br /> Below are a couple links as usual, and we urge you, if you have any doubts about your knowledge of the Underground Railroad, to go see what you can learn!!<br /> Don&#039;t forget that learning is an adventure as well!!
