When the message finally came through, she had to look behind her to see if anyone could see the explicit message he had sent.
She was in a café waiting on Imani to arrive for their lunch date but, as usual, Imani was late.
Adam had offered to keep her company while she waited, so she wasn't at all bothered. Blushing, she typed an equally explicit message back to Adam and then asked if she'd be seeing him later.
The smile on her face faded at his response that he'd be working late and, while he'd try to stop by her place, she shouldn't get mad if he couldn't.
For two weeks, they'd seen each other; their friends with benefits arrangement that they had first agreed on turning into something more.
At first, they went out together from time to time but never called their outings dates. Doing so would take away from their casual arrangement, as Diandra had told Adam, and he had agreed with her wholeheartedly. What they were doing was having fun and enjoying each other's friendship, he had said but, as the days went by, Diandra found herself having to convince herself of that and, eventually, Adam asked her out on an official date.
The more time they spent together, the more she felt him pulling her in. He was hilarious, always saying or doing random things to make her smile. She often found herself just staring at him as he spoke without actually hearing what he was saying. Whenever he spoke of books or traveling, he was passionate about things; he got a glint in his eyes that was mesmerizing to her.
"I've been watching you from the door for five minutes," Imani abruptly appeared and sat down across from her. "You're texting with Adam, aren't you?"
"What I'm doing is waiting on my best friend who didn't bother to tell me she'd be 30 minutes late," Diandra shot back, and Imani blew her a peck. "Where have you been?"
"My stepmom called," Imani grumbled, and that was all Diandra needed to hear to forgive her for being late.
"What was she complaining about this time?"
Diandra pushed a second cup of coffee that she had barely touched toward her. "As usual, she was arguing about me not visiting home and for ignoring dad's calls. I ignore his calls because he cares about nothing but himself and the family business." She took a sip of the coffee and sighed. "I graduated at the top of my class and he doesn't even care. He didn't even bother to come to my graduation."
She took another sip of the coffee and slid down in her seat.
She held her head back and closed her eyes for a moment, taking deep, steady breaths and, when she opened her eyes again, she smiled at Diandra and sat up.
"But enough about my parents and me, tell me how things are going with lover boy, rich boy, handsome boy!"
"Alright," Diandra laughed, as Imani fanned herself. "Things are... going great. It feels good to have someone to talk to, to share certain things with, someone to satisfy your needs and all. The friends with benefits thing was great, but it didn't last long."
"Sounds like heaven."
Diandra reclined in her seat and moved her hair behind her ear. "It is. He's a great guy."
Imani pushed the half drank cup of coffee to the side, and Diandra frowned as a waitress walked by their table with a burger, for she suddenly felt like throwing up from the smell of it. Her nose had always been sensitive and sometimes only working when it wanted to.
She could sit in the kitchen while cooking and still not smell her food burning, while if she ate and placed her plate on her nightstand, minutes later, the smell would make her gag.
"Have you heard anything back?" Imani puckered her lips and pointed toward Diandra's phone with her mouth. "The dentist office you had worked at. You said you've been waiting on their call for a few days now."
"Since I called them three days ago, I haven't heard anything back. They had said I should tell them once I graduate, and they'd give me a job there. So here I am, still waiting."
"Maybe they don't have any open positions as yet," Imani suggested, and Diandra shrugged as she moved all of her hair onto one shoulder.
She had been waiting anxiously for days now and was on the verge of giving up and applying elsewhere.
"Maybe, but I've been keeping my phone close just in case."
A waitress who had been walking by their table stopped. "Do you ladies need anything else?"
"Ah no," Diandra smiled at her. "Imani?"
"I'm good," Imani answered pleasantly, and Diandra asked for the check.
"Why? I just got here?"
"The smell of their burgers is driving me crazy. I feel like I'm going to throw up," she pointed her thumb behind her, and Imani's brows furrowed.
"Okay then, so what's the plan? Are we going to the mall or heading home? Personally, I prefer going to your place."
The waitress returned with the check and Diandra paid quickly before practically pushing Imani out of the café. She took deep breaths once outside, clearing the scent of the burger from her nose.
They were walking distance away from her apartment, so she'd be able to enjoy the fresh air.
"Have you heard from your dad?"
Diandra shook her head. "Not since he showed up at my place the last time. Within ten minutes, we had started arguing."
"Hmm, a new record," Imani muttered under her breath. "How did it go with him meeting Adam?"
"He wasn't as disrespectful like in the past with trying to throw his weight around, but he did ignore Adam as if he wasn't there."
They waited to cross the street with a group of people and Diandra eyed a woman holding an umbrella and a newborn baby. One day that would be her, she thought to herself. She'd take many walks with her princess or prince but first she'd have to land a job, a good one, and also a man that she could build a family with.
The last thing she wanted was for her child or children to grow up in a sad, broken family the way she had.
"How was Adam after meeting him?" Their conversation continued once they were on the other side of the street. "He was a little freaked out, right? Honestly, I don't think there is anyone your dad doesn't scare except for you."
There was a time when he had scared Diandra too. He had been a giant to her then; a giant man that she didn't know because he had pulled away from her after her mom passed away.
"He didn't seem bothered, but he could have just been hiding it."
Her phone then began to vibrate in her jeans pocket and her heart skipped a beat when she saw the caller ID. She rushed to the side of a building and answered.
"Hello, good morning." She crossed her fingers and held them up to Imani, who did the same. Diandra held her head back and mouthed, 'Thank you, God.' "Yes, I understand, that works. Thank you so much."
The call ended, and she returned her phone to her pocket.
"So?" Imani drawled.
"I have an interview on Friday at 2pm!"
"Yes!" Imani screamed and pulled Diandra in for a hug. "Congrats, honey, you'll get the job for sure."
"Fingers crossed," Diandra told her, as they continued on their way to her apartment.
She sighed with relief that her life was finally at a place where she felt contented. She wasn't in a relationship, but her friendship with Adam was a happy one and she was about to begin the next phase of her life to become a dentist.
She removed her phone from her pocket once more and sent a quick message to Adam, telling him of the good news. It took him seconds to respond, telling her congratulations and that they'd have to celebrate soon.
She had two days to prepare for her interview on Friday, and that would be more than enough time.
They got back to her apartment, and she went straight into the kitchen to make herself a cup of tea. She wasn't sure what was going on with her if she was catching some kind of bug, but she felt exhausted from the short walk back to the apartment, and her stomach still felt uneasy from the burger she had smelt.
As she drank her tea and Imani ordered her to get into bed, she hoped that when she woke up she'd feel better.
----------
Diandra slept through the entire evening and night, only waking up once to use the bathroom before crawling back into bed. In the morning, she felt brand new, but the feeling of bliss was short-lived because, as she tried to find an outfit for her interview, she realized she had none.
She had a closet filled with clothes, but she wasn't comfortable with any of the six outfits she tried on.
She didn't want to dress too flashy or too simple, which led to her and Imani taking a trip to the mall. S
She stood her ground with Imani on that they weren't at the mall for a shopping spree, and she got an outfit in the first store they went into. They visited another for shoes, and Diandra gave in and followed Imani into another store, where she then left with a new pair of jeans and two tops.
"This is why I hate coming to the mall with you," she grumbled at Imani as they exited the store. "I don't need more jeans."
"A woman always needs more jeans," Imani abruptly turned to face Diandra. "I think I left something in the store. Let's go back real quick."
Diandra's brows furrowed. "What? What did you leave?"
"I don't think I had gotten a receipt. Let's go."
She began turning Diandra around, who glimpsed someone familiar a few steps away from them. She removed Imani's hands from her shoulders as she stared at Adam chatting with a woman. His hands were buried in his pockets as he gazed down at the brunette with a look on his face that Diandra knew well.
She bit down on her lip as she watched them both for a moment, reading the woman's body language to know they weren't just friends having a chat.
The woman stepped forward, closing the gap between her and Adam to wrap her hands around his waist. Diandra's heart fell and shattered as Adam pecked the top of the woman's head and hugged her.
He reached down to rest his hand on the woman's hip, who then tipped on her toes to peck his cheek.
Diandra felt sick as she recalled Adam putting those same lips on her. She wondered for how long he'd been seeing this woman and if, like Imani, she had just been the side girl being used for intercourse with no thought to her feelings.
"D, let's just go," Imani tugged on her arm, but Diandra pulled away.
Boiling hot rage began to heat her body and she placed her bags on the ground and removed her phone from her handbag. She dialed Adam's number and watched as he pulled his phone from his back pocket and hung up the call.
Diandra felt like punching a wall, already cursing herself for being foolish to think she and Adam were on the same page. They were only dating and weren't a committed couple, but they had both shared their thoughts on dating with each other and, from the impression Adam had given her, she thought he had felt the same as her, that playing games was a waste of time and being transparent was the best thing to do.
Her legs started moving and, behind her, Imani sighed. Diandra had no intention of causing a scene, but was going to let Adam know he was scum.
As she drew closer to them, Adam looked her way and froze, his eyes widening for a second in shock. He slowly untangled himself from the girl as Diandra came to a stop beside them, and the woman pulled back. She looked back and forth between Adam and Diandra, who were staring at each other without speaking. She then cleared her throat, but no one looked her way.
"Diandra, what are you doing here?"
"It's a mall," she answered right away. "Last time I checked, this is a public space."
The woman kept looking from one to the other and she cleared her throat again, but still, neither Adam nor Diandra looked her way.
Diandra smiled as she looked Adam up and down, but it wasn't a warm smile. She was like a wolf snarling, her eyes narrowed and deadly.
"Transparency, remember?" She placed her hands behind her back to stop herself from attacking him. For so long, she'd gone without developing even an ounce of feelings for anyone, and then in walked Adam with his gorgeous smile and lies that he wanted to take things further.
That's what was killing Diandra. He was the one that had suggested they be more than friends with benefits.
"All you had to do was be honest with me and our arrangement would have stayed as is, instead of you feeding me the nonsense that you wanted to give things a try."
"I'm sorry, who are you?" the brunette finally asked, and Adam grabbed Diandra's arm and led her away.
"Don't make a scene, Diandra," he growled, and she looked down at her arm in his hand.
"I sound calm, don't I? I think I do and you're the one causing a scene. Let go of me."
Adam's hand fell to his side and Diandra crossed her arms over her chest. "Was it fun? Huh? Tell me. Was it fun saying all the things you did?"
He took a deep breath and looked at the brunette who had walked away. He watched her storm through the mall until she vanished before turning back to Diandra.
"Things have changed, Diandra, that's all. I should have told you about..." he waved his hand in the direction his date had gone, and Diandra shook her head and laughed, but it was dry and humorless. "I was going to tell you."
"Sure, Adam, you would have told me when? After your date, a day from now, a week, when? Or maybe you should have told me the moment you started speaking to someone else."
She turned to walk away and he grabbed her arm. She yanked her hand away, and a few people walking by them gave them a wide berth.
Diandra took a deep breath and then released it. "You know, I don't care so much that you're seeing someone else. It's the fact that you suggested wanting more, wanting us to be more, you." She swallowed hard as she suddenly got the urge to throw up. "Do you know why men are called dogs, Adam, it's because you behave like dogs that chase cars. You chase something and, the moment you catch it, you have no idea what to do with it, so you chase another."
"That, that right there is your problem," he shot back and Diandra cackled loudly.
"Oh, I have a problem now? Go ahead, do what men are known to do in situations like this. Go ahead and try to make this my fault, and you were the one just caught with someone else." She held her hand up. "Let me do it for you. Diandra, you're clingy, you're insecure, I can't breathe already, you're asking for too much."
Adam threw his hands up. "You know since you know everything, okay. Okay, Diandra! We're done, okay, I thought I wanted this, and I don't, so there. I'm honest with you now, happy?"
He turned and walked away, walking between a man and his girlfriend, and Diandra's jaws clenched tightly. Every fiber in her being was telling her to yell at him, but she'd held onto what was left of her dignity and walked away.
She returned to Imani's side and took her bags, her hands shaking. She said nothing as they walked from the mall because she feared she'd fall to pieces if she opened her mouth. She wanted to hit everything in sight and scream.
They hopped into Imani's car and Diandra dropped the seat to lie down.
Imani stared at her for a moment as she covered her face in the curve of her elbow. "Ice cream?" She asked, and Diandra grunted. "Ice cream it is."
She started the car and drove off but stopped a few seconds later. She rolled her window down a little and flipped Adam off while talking to the brunette, who was in tears.
"D might not say this because she's decent, but I will. You're a prick and a man child, and your shaft's small." Diandra started laughing when Imani's tires screeched as she drove off. "Screw you!"
They both started laughing hysterically as they joined the midday traffic.
"I should have videoed that," Diandra wiped away tears and sighed. "Thanks."
"Of course, sis, no one treats my girl like this and gets away with it. I should have gotten out and slashed his tires."
Diandra pulled her seat up while chuckling and pulled her seatbelt across her. "You're actually crazy."
Imani reached out and held her hand. "He's a fool, okay, and I'm sure he knows that. It's his loss, D."
"I know."
But Diandra still felt a little shattered.
*****
She had never before been so embarrassed.
For days she'd been getting the feeling to throw up without actually doing so, and it chose to happen during her interview. Her old boss Mrs. Rosaline Kelly had been concerned and attentive, but her interview could not continue afterward.
Mrs. Kelly had reassured her not to worry and that she'd reach out to her, but Diandra felt crushed and not just because she felt like throwing up some more.
For once, she had been thankful something was going relatively easy for her, but that indeed backfired.
The moment she got into her apartment, she dropped everything in her hand and ran to the bathroom. She fell to her knees above the toilet and emptied what was left in her stomach.
Her throat was burning and there was a disgusting taste in her mouth, but she didn't have the strength to make it to the sink.
She wasn't someone that got sick often, and she couldn't recall the last time she felt like this.
Diandra wasn't sure when she had fallen asleep on the bathroom floor, but she eventually woke up and had the strength to make it to the kitchen. She fixed herself some tea and drank two cups of it before going to her front door to pick up her things.
There were miscalls from her dad and Imani, but she chose to call Imani back. If her father heard her in the state she was in, he would be there in an hour, and they would undoubtedly find something to argue about.
Imani answered on the third ring. "Hey, where have you been? How did it go?"
"Not great," Diandra walked over to the sofa and sat down. "I don't think I'm going to get the job."
"What happened?"
"I got sick while I was there. I literally just woke up after falling asleep on the bathroom floor," she tipped over to lie on her side with her eyes closed. "I don't know what's going on with me."
"You never get sick," Imani said, in disbelief. "Maybe it's the stomach flu," she paused. "Are you late?"
The crease between Diandra's brows smoothed out and her eyes popped open. She didn't answer right away because that thought hadn't occurred to her at all.
"Um..." she tried to recall her last period. "No, I'm not late, not yet."
"I'm coming over, and I'm buying a pregnancy test."
Diandra sat up a little too swiftly, wincing as she felt a cramp in her stomach. "I'm not pregnant, Imani."
"We'll know for sure once you take the test, and then we'll be going to the doctor. Whatever you have, it's getting worse."
Imani hung up, and Diandra placed her phone on the sofa beside her. She began chewing on her bottom lip as she focused on remembering her last period. She opened her phone to check the calendar because, while she had said she wasn't late, she needed to be sure.
The second she opened her calendar, she threw her phone backdown onto the sofa.
She leaned forward to palm her face with her hands, fresh tears of panic springing to her eyes. She didn't like crying, but she couldn't stop the tears as they rolled down her cheek.
She was indeed late.
She sat up, her eyes looking around the apartment frantically.
"This can't be happening."
She got up and starting pacing, trying to remember if she had unprotected intercourse with Adam. Indeed they had a few times, but he had pulled out in time, or so she had thought.
Shaking her head, she told herself she wasn't pregnant. They had been careful and, once Imani arrived, she'd see she had nothing to worry about. She'd visit the doctor and receive meds for whatever bug she had caught.
A baby wasn't on the cards for her. Not yet, and most definitely not with Adam. No 2024-07-31 19:15 active 1197 0 916899313533280 🔥🔥 Click to Read 👉🏻👉🏻 He reached down to rest his hand on the woman's hip, who then tipped on her toes to peck his cheek.
As she drew closer to them, Adam looked her way and froze.
"Diandra, what are you doing here?"
"It's a mall," she answered right away.
"I'm sorry, who are you?" the brunette finally asked, and Adam grabbed Diandra's arm and led her away.
"Don't make a scene, Diandra," he growled.
"I sound calm, don't I?"
"Things have changed, Diandra, that's all..." he waved his hand in the direction his date had gone.
Diandra shook her head and laughed, but it was dry and humorless. "I was going to tell you I was pregnant."
————————
Diandra stared at her phone, watching the three dots appear and disappear as Adam typed.
All the stress around us trying - and failing - to have a baby," he said. "And well, I needed to feel like a man again, I guess. I don't expect you to understand, but this has nothing to do with you."
"Having a baby was your idea, Stephen," I scoffed. "You were the one so adamant that we get pregnant right away. It was you that pressured me into going off birth control so your parents would get to meet your children before they passed."
"Yeah, I know. I know," he said softly. "Its just intercourse got to be rather boring, you know? Monotonous. It was like we were just mechanical and clinical about trying to get pregnant and it took some of the fun and pleasure out of it."
I stared at him, slack-jawed, and fought the urge to smack out of him. I was better than that. I wouldn't let my anger get the best of me, no matter how much of a jerk he was being right now.
"Okay, so why are you telling me this now?" I asked. "Did you end things with her?"
"No, in fact –" he took a deep breath and looked away, "Jessica is pregnant with my child, Camille. It's obvious now why we were having problems. It wasn't me – it was you. I know it sounds harsh, but I can't be with someone who can't give me children. No matter how much I love you."
Tears welled up in my eyes, and this time, it was my turn to look out the window and away from him. I couldn't stand to look at him, knowing that for months now, he'd been sleeping with my former assistant and friend behind my back. Knowing that he thought there was something wrong with me because he'd been able to knock her up.
"Get out," I said.
My voice didn't crack, and I sounded firm. In control. Good for me.
"What? We still have to meet with –"
"I said, get out. I can't be in the same room with you right now."
————————
Camille
I tapped my nails against the desk and stared at the clock, my insides roiling. Fifteen minutes late and counting. Stephen wasn't usually one to keep people waiting, which was upsetting enough. But he wasn't answering his phone or responding to my texts either, which only upset – and worried – me further.
I smiled politely at his team, Ricardo, and Tracey, sitting across from me. This was originally his meeting to run, not mine. The fact that he wasn't there left me feeling put on the spot and more than a little uncomfortable.
Stephen Doyle was my fiancé' and partner in Zesta Creative Design. He was the financial guru who handled the tedious details that allowed me to focus on the fun stuff. Ricardo and Tracey were interns from the local university, both majoring in finance and accounting like my darling beau, and together, we were supposed to go over the position and their responsibilities.
However, given Stephen's absence, it appeared that I'd be handling the meeting alone.
I'd turned my face back to the handbook, when the door opened, and my fiancé' stepped through, looking frazzled. His sandy blonde hair, which he kept trimmed short to his head with just a little length on top, was standing on end as if he hadn't bothered to brush it that morning. His eyes were tired, but there was a sparkle in them as if whatever kept him up late last night had been worth it. He'd canceled our date without an explanation, so I had no idea what could have gotten him so excited this morning.
Stephen was a strapping, good-looking man. A former quarterback in college, where we met, he looked like he could step onto the field even today. Usually, he wore designer suits and dressed to perfection, looking every bit the part of CFO. Today, however, he was wearing a button-up shirt and jeans. I cocked an eyebrow as he joined me at the conference table.
"Sorry," he said. "I had something come up at the last minute."
He was smiling wide, but he wouldn't look at me. He kept resisting my gaze, instead of delving into the handbook and reading the exact same page I'd just finished up.
"Would you two give us a minute?" I asked.
The interns nodded and slipped out of the room, almost seeming grateful to have an out – if only for a few minutes. Maybe they knew something was up, that the world was about to come crashing down around me and wanted to get outside the blast radius. Or maybe I was just being paranoid. Either way, they scurried out of the conference room like their hair was on fire and waited outside the door.
"Stephen? Is everything okay?" I asked.
"MmmHmm," he said, finally meeting my eyes.
When he did though, the smile on his face disappeared completely. The look in his eyes was guarded, and his expression was suddenly colder than the Arctic tundra.
"Should we really be having this conversation here, Cam?" he asked.
I shrugged and put my pen down on the table, leaning back in my chair. "You tell me? You're the one who canceled last night, without an excuse," I said. "And today, you're twenty minutes late to your own meeting. I think I have a right to ask you what's going on. If not as your fiancé', then at least as your business partner."
He ran a hand through his hair and sighed. "I would rather have this discussion in private."
"We're alone. No one can hear us through the door," I said.
My voice started to crack. Over the last year or so, things had grown tense in our relationship. Okay, perhaps a bit more than tense. There was a tension between us that seemed to be growing by the day. His sister had popped out baby number three and Stephen was eager to get started on our family, even though our wedding wasn't scheduled until later in the year.
We figured it couldn't hurt to get started though, so I went off all birth control and figured we'd be pregnant in no time. There we were though, ten months later, and still no pregnancy. I knew it stressed him out, and he'd started distancing himself from me. Maybe I was just being overly sensitive, but it felt like he thought I was broken, or somehow, less than a woman for not being able to conceive.
"Fine," he grumbled. "Do youremember Jessica?"
"Jessica Harvey? Yeah, of course. She was my assistant for years," I said.
Jessica had quit our company out of the blue about three months back. It was completely unexpected, and I was still reeling from the shock of losing someone I'd counted on for years, someone I'd considered a friend for so long. We didn't talk much anymore. I tried to get together for coffee dates now and then, just to keep up with her. She was always too busy though – or was just avoiding me, I feared. I wanted to ask her what I'd done wrong, but she'd ghosted me, and that's where we were at.
"Yeah, well, there's something you need to know," Stephen said. He looked out the large, glass window out to the sprawling city of Los Angeles below. "I've been seeing her for the last few months, and –"
"Wait, say that again?" I stammered.
My chest tightened, and a cold chill swept through my body. I didn't believe my ears. Not at first. As I stared at him, looked deep into his eyes though, I came to see the truth.
"Cammy, I'm sorry," Stephen said.
His voice didn't sound all that sorry, though. He shrugged and threw his hands in their air. He acted like this was somehow my fault. As if I'd somehow driven him into her arms. Into her bed.
"It just happened.
"Camille, we have a business to run together," he argued.
I wiped at my eyes, not allowing the tears to fall. I knew he was right. This company was initially mine, but he'd invested a lot of his own money over the years. Like it or not, we'd have to find a way to work together, at least until I could figure something else out. There was no way I was going to be tied to this man for the rest of my life.
"Fine," I mumbled.
I packed my things up and put it all into my briefcase as calmly as I could. I was trembling, but I didn't think Stephen could tell. I hoped not. I needed to appear calm and in control of myself. I wasn't about to give him the satisfaction of seeing me fall apart.
"You can meet with your interns alone," I said. "I'll make myself scarce, and we can talk about the company later."
"You're handling this better than I thought you would, Cam," he said.
For a second, I thought I heard the regret in his voice. Like on some level, he realized what a prick he was being and felt bad. Even if I had though, what good would it do now? The damage was done, and this was one bell that could not be un-rung.
I glared at him. I wanted to scream at him, to tell him what a junk he was. I wanted to lash out. What would that accomplish other than make me look like an unhinged psycho, though? My head was spinning, and I couldn't think straight. Better to cool off before I said or did something I'd regret later. Like he said, we still had a business to run together, and like it or not, we'd have to work together for the good of Zesta. At least, for now.
"For what it's worth, Cam," Stephen said, his voice soft and filled with emotion. "I'm sorry you're broken. I know how much you wanted to have children of your own, and this can't be easy to hear."
I clutched my briefcase to my chest, keeping my hands busy instead of using them to show Stephen how I really felt about him. A homicide charge for strangling the life out of him probably wouldn't be a good look for the company. I didn't say another word though, and slipped out of the conference room, coming face to face with the interns who looked at me, puzzled expressions on their faces.
"Stephen is going to take over from here. I have somewhere I need to be," I lied.
I held my head up high and smiled politely at Ricardo and Tracey as I held the door open for them. Tracey gave me a look, her eyes filled with concern, but then looked away quickly. Ricardo seemed oblivious, ducking into the room and shaking hands with my fiancé' – scratch that, my ex-fiancé.'
I shut the door behind them and hurried down the hall to my office, avoiding eye contact with everyone as I passed. I walked briskly past the cubicles of our employees until I got to the end of the hall, to my corner office, and slunk inside, falling against the door as I closed it behind me.
As soon as I was alone, I didn't have to keep my composure. I let it all out. I slid to the floor and held my knees to my chest. The tears came hard and fast, but there was more than just sadness over the relationship ending – I was pissed about the betrayal. Grief and rage flooded my body in equal measure.
---
"Complete jackass," my friend agreed. "And you really think this Jessica bimbo is pregnant with his kid? Pfft, I'm pretty sure he's the one shooting blanks."
"You think so?"
My voice cracked a bit at the question. I put my glass down on the table and smoothed out my skirt, focusing on my hands instead of Liv. While I could agree that the entire situation was all kinds of screwed up, I still wasn't sure if I believed him about me being unable to have kids or not. I was leaning toward him being right, simply because it made sense. Because somehow, somewhere deep down, I figured this was somehow my fault.
"I think his side piece has a side piece of her own," Liv said, flagging down the waiter. "And seriously, what better revenge would there be than him realizing she's sleeping around on him and then finding out you can really have kids after all, huh?"
"I suppose," I said, shrugging.
"You suppose?" Liv asked as the waiter poured us more water. "Wouldn't you love to wipe that smug look off his face and tell him that he's the one who's broken?"
"Well, yeah, but I don't think that's the case, Liv," I said grumpily.
"Aren't you a Negative Nelly?" Liv said, rolling her eyes. When I didn't say anything, she sighed and added, "Just humor me, alright?"
"Fine," I said, shrugging. "I guess I have nothing to lose."
Well, except for all my dreams of one day having a child with a man I loved, sure, but since I already figured that was the case, it wasn't like I'd be getting any worse news.
At least I hoped not.
I didn't think I could take any more.
---
Preston
Dr. Preston Winters , M.D. The name plate had been added to the door recently. It was a matte silver with black lettering. Simple and yet, classy. I was the newest doctor to be brought on at the Hollywood Hills Women's and Children Center, and seeing my name officially listed on the office door was thrilling. A dream come true for someone who wasn't even sure they'd survive medical school, much less my residency. Getting to this point in my career had been harder than I ever imagined it to be, but I couldn't have asked for a better clinic to start with.
Our receptionist, Kelly, was sitting at the front desk when I entered. She smiled politely at me, pushing her glasses up higher on her nose.
"Good morning, Miss Temple," I said, stepping through the door and into the back.
"Good morning, Dr. Winters. Looks like you have a full day today," Kelly said, scanning the appointment calendar in the computer with a furrowed brow. "Looks like you're taking a few of Dr. Garcia's patients today, her son is sick."
"Not a problem. That's why they brought me on," I said.
"Your first patient will be here right at nine," she said. "She requested the earliest possible appointment with Dr. Garcia."
"Shouldn't be a problem," I said, continuing down the hall toward my office.
My personal office was already coming together. Several bookshelves filled with medical journals sat behind a large oak desk. The obligatory diploma and a few personal pictures hung on the pale blue walls. I sat down at my desk, which had several photos on top as well. One photograph of my mom was prominent, a reminder of why I'd gone into this field in the first place. My other reminder was in another frame beside her photo. It was of a little boy wearing a soccer uniform and shooting the camera a gap-toothed grin. He had his mother's large, brown eyes, but my family's naturally tanned complexion and sandy blonde hair.
There was a knock at my door, pulling me out of my brief reverie.
"Yes?"
One of the nurses, Paola, popped her head in and said, "Sorry to bother you, but your first patient is here and keeps asking when Dr. Garcia will see her. Says she has to be back at work by ten-thirty, at the latest."
"I'll be right there," I said, chuckling to myself.
So many people schedule doctor's appointments, expecting to be in and out in an hour or less like this was some cheap fast-food joint. We catered to a higher-end clientele, meaning many of the people were impatient and entitled. It came with the territory there in Hollywood Hills, I supposed.
Since I was taking on Dr. Garcia's patients at the last minute, I hadn't had a chance to look over the patient's file. I was walking in blind, essentially. I followed Paolo to the room, and before I entered, she handed me the file on her. I glanced down, started to read through it when the door opened.
"Hello? I really need to –"
Big, sparkling, sapphire blue eyes stared back at me, and they grew wider once she saw me stepping through the door. Couldn't say I wasn't a little bit surprised myself.
I couldn't help but note the mahogany curls and how they fell just perfectly over her cool, pale skin, gently touching her freckled shoulders – shoulders that were undressed thanks to the sleeveless pink sundress she was wearing. Looking into her face, I realized I knew her from somewhere. I couldn't place it right away, but I'd seen that face somewhere before. We handled a lot of celebrities, and she was definitely attractive enough to be a model or actress, but I wasn't sure that was it.
I looked down at the name on file. "Camille O'Hare? Is that –"
"Preston? Preston Winters, is that you?" she stammered.
"Yeah, that's me," I said and smiled.
When I heard her speak, the pieces fell into place, and I knew where I knew her from. High school. A long time ago in a galaxy far away. There was no mistaking her though.
"No offense, but where's Dr. Garcia?" Camille asked, looking past me at Paola, who still stood in the doorway.
"Apparently, I'm Dr. Garcia today," I said, giving my old high school friend the once over.
Camille looked good. It was an unprofessional thought, but one I couldn't shake. I almost didn't recognize her.
"Glad to see you still remember me," I said.
Paola stepped away to help another patient, and I walked into Camille's room, opening her file on the table and reading through it. I closed the door behind us when Camille stepped back inside, her jaw nearly on the floor.
"So, you really did it, huh?" she asked.
She flopped up on the examining room table, her arms crossed in front of her. She was smiling, though a bit tense. But I took the smile as a good sign.
"You made it through medical school," she said.
"Either that or I'm really good at faking it," I teased, turning to face her, mirroring how she folded her arms in front of her chest.
I had a hard time concealing my amazement at the transformation. Camille had changed a lot since high school. Her porcelain skin was clear and smoother than it had ever been back then. Her hair was a tad darker with some highlights in it now, and longer too. She used to keep her hair cut short, but the length did wonders for bringing out the soft features of her perfectly oval face.
"As you can tell, I'm not Dr. Garcia," I said. "She had a family issue and won't be in today. But if you'd like to reschedule and wait for her, we can arrange it."
She bit her bottom lip and looked away. I could tell she was considering it. Not that I blamed her, given our past. Instead of answering my question outright, she smiled at me softly.
"You look good, Preston," she said. "I know it's been what, ten years? But I'm glad to see you're doing well."
"You seem to be doing well too," I said, forcing myself to maintain eye contact with her.
Camille's dress showed off some ample cleavage, and I was having a hard time not admiring it. I'm a professional. I couldn't have made it this far if I checked out my patients like a pervert. It was difficult though because I am still a man, and Camille was different.
"Paola mentioned you were in a hurry to get back to work so I won't take too much of your time," I said. "If you'd like to reschedule, we can arrange for you to see Dr. Garcia another time."
"I can't reschedule," she sighed. "There are no other doctors here today?"
"No, I'm afraid not," I said. "It's just me at the moment."
She took a deep breath, and the smile that had been on her face earlier fell as she stared at her hands. She picked at her perfectly manicured nails as if the nail polish was chipping, but she was only fidgeting. She looked tense and uncomfortable.
"I mean, I guess it's been ten years or so since we –" she cut herself off, clearing her throat before continuing, "I think it'll be fine. You're a professional, after all."
"Of course," I said, my voice softening. "I take my job very seriously, and what happened in our past will stay in the past, Camille."
She turned her face up and met my gaze. In her eyes, I saw so much pain. I was taken aback at first, assuming that look was because of me, but then she wiped at her eyes and shook her head.
"I'm here because my fiancé – err, my ex-fiancé – believes I can't have children."
I pulled out her file, read through some of the notes from her past visits.
"Have you seen a fertility specialist before?" I asked.
She shook her head, and again, she looked away. "No, but we've been trying for well over a year, and there's been no luck."
"You know it takes two to make a baby, right?" I asked. "It very well could be –"
"He apparently got another woman pregnant pretty recently."
"Oh," I said, closing the file.
I figured that this went deeper than her medical history anyway. Her blue eyes were wide and filled with fear as she looked to me for answers. Being in this field, I often worked with women worried about their fertility. She wouldn't be the first woman I'd seen who was fearful about her chances of ever having a baby. She just so happened to be first who'd admitted such personal details as to why she believed she was the problem.
"You'd been trying for a year, no birth control?" I asked.
"I was never on the pill, I used non-hormonal methods. No hormones to wean myself off of, I thought I'd get pregnant pretty easily, but –" she stammered, taking a deep breath and seeming to gather her composure before speaking again, "but obviously that hasn't happened. As you should be able to see in my history, my periods have never been regular, and while I've never been diagnosed officially, Dr. Garcia suspected I might suffer from ovarian cysts."
I opened the file again and looked through the notes, studying them a little more in depth. There was one little note mentioning some discomfort and cramping from a few months back, which could be cysts, or it could have been cramps.
"Is there something we can do, Preston?" she asked.pregnating her and proving that prick ex of hers wrong caused a tightness low in my groin. Or maybe, just the idea of being with her again was causing it. Either way, blood rushed down my body, forcing me to turn away from Camille, afraid she'd notice my reaction.
"Well, I will complete an exam, and we can run some tests," I said and cleared my throat.
I cursed at my lower body as I pretended to read through her file some more, waiting for my shaft to get the message that this wasn't the time or place for such antics. As soon as I felt my body listening to me, I turned back around and gave her what I hoped was a comforting smile.
"Do you mind lying down for me?" I asked.
