Weâre getting closer! We will be celebrating our 49th anniversary đFebruary 1 & 2. In 1976, Chick Selbe enrolled in a course for auctioneering. He was already a Kansas licensed real estate broker and his thought was that the auctions would work well with the real estate. He attended Reisch Worldwide College of Auctioneering in Mason City, Iowa. In August of that same year, Greg and I were married and his first auction was selling my wedding shoe. And, thatâs another story for another day⊠When he formed Prairie Heritage Auction and Real Estate, Chick had found his true calling. A natural and gifted salesman, Selbe had a gift for selling real estate and running the auction business. With an auction crew consisting of his family and friends, he was an auctioneer for over 30 years and never met an auction he didnât love. He started the Kansas School of Auctioneering and taught dozens of students, many of whom are successful auctioneers in their own locales today. In 1978, I became a Kansas licensed real estate salesperson. In 1989, I graduated from KS School of auctioneering receiving a diploma along with his inaugural class. Auctions were first held in the Township Hall (Senior Citizen Center) and the VFW. In 1978, an auction building was built at the corner of Washington and Cardinal Ave. It had built in bleachers along with an auction podium and cashiering office and concession stand. In 1983, a new office building was built in downtown Plainville at the corner of Mill and Main which housed four offices. In 1985, the auction building on Washington was sold and a new 9,000 square foot building was erected north of Plainville â Heritage Hall. Then in 1994, Selbe bought the bowling alley and it was soon turned into another auction facility. While we were conducting one auction out north, Auction City Limits was being filled with merchandise. We would have one auction at Heritage Hall and the next one at Auction City Limits. We leased and later sold Heritage Hall. Over the years, we have conducted hundreds of auctions and to this day still have âpermanent numbers.â Permanent numbers are buyers who attend our auctions and donât have to register because they have a permanent number already registered. A list of our beginning permanent numbers would have included Bill Kriley, Ed Branch, Herman and Vivian Ganoung, Paul and Mary Williams, Dale and Daisy Stagner, Johnny Jones and Jake Hrabe. In 2012 after Dad passed, the girls and I talked about whether to keep the auction business going. In the end, it became a necessity to continue to conduct auctions as we had family members and auction crew family members who passed and items needed sold. Through the years, this business survived even with each of our crew having a ârealâ job. We all came together for the auctions. Our current auction crew members include my sisters â Sheila (Selbe) Hachmeister and Lora (Selbe) Weigel who have worked in this business since the beginning. Sheila will tell you she was in grade school when this all began. Paula (Williams) Glick who started working for us in the 80âs along with Kelly (Johnson) Lowry who started in the 90âs. Tammy (Finnesy) Werner started working at the auctions when she just had her twins 20+ (this year one of those twins became a Mom!), Stephanie (Sneath) Nuss has worked with us for almost 20 years and Gwen Hitchcock has almost ten years, Jamie Martin and Jason Stahl are my set up crew and man the concession stand auction day. Paige Harding is our substitute. All of our children & now grandchildren have worked in some capacity at the auction whether rolling carpet, working in the concession stand, taking bids or carrying items. We are the only locally owned real estate business in Plainville. We are honored to help with community fundraisers.
